Aussie network ‘Seven’ to launch 7mate for “male audience.” Sexist?
    Much?

    http://unrealityshout.com/blogs/auss...9D-sexist-much

While perusing The Hollywood Reporter today, I found an article about
the Seven network in Australia launching a channel just for men…

Now, I’m not a bra burning feminist or anything – let’s face it, if I
don’t rein these puppies in, they’ll be polishing my knees,so no BBQ
bra for me – but surely a channel aimed specifically at men is a)
    Neanderthal and b) insulting?

I find it insulting anyway, primarily because the line-up of shows
that 7mate will be showing are shows that I would and do watch, and
I’m most definitely a female. I’ve seen my birth certificate.

They’ll be showing Family Guy, American Dad, Top Gear and sci-fi type
shows, but big news flash Seven, girls like that stuff too! We don’t
all sit and watch – exclusively – shows about hair and make-up and
    shiny things you know…

    We aren’t all Paris Hilton.

The network’s CEO, David Leckie, issued a press release about the
launch of 7mate which read that the channel “will be aimed at men 16
    to 49.”

So not only is it sexist, it’s ageist too! Men of 50 and over don’t
    like sports, cars, cartoons etc??

Leckie went on to say, “Seven is Australia’s most-watched network and
our suite of multi-channels delivers more viewers than anyone else.

“The launch of 7mate delivers us a tremendous platform of channels
targeting specific audience demographics – leveraging our primary
channel’s success with women and 7Two’s targeting of a 25+ adult
    audience.

“We’re delighted to be the first commercial network to moveto three
channels … this is another significant step for our television
    business.”

And Seven’s director of programming, Tim Worner, added, “We’re using
the biggest sports event to launch 7mate but this new channel will be
    so much more than sport.

“We are after the most elusive demographic in media, and we think
we’ve got the offering to get them."

How are these “elusive” viewers?? That’s like half the population of
the world, give or take, so unless they are actually aiming to bring
throw-back cave dwellers into their family of viewers, I fail to see
what or who is so “elusive.”

So in short, grow up Seven and live in the now! Women like those shows
too, and guess what else? Not all men are into sport and cars.

Oh and also? We women call our friends ‘mates’ too, that’s another
thing that’s not the exclusive domain of men, and calling your channel
7mate won’t necessarily ensure males flick to it and think, “Ooh, it
says ‘Mate’…must be for men only then and I'd better watch it.”

    Epic fail.

USA has SPIKE. that's a channel aimed at male viewers, and the girls
can watch Lifetime and Hallmark. Nothing sexist about it. 2DAY FM is a
Sydney radio station aimed at 15-35 age group women, 2MMM is aimed at
    the boys.

It will be interesting to see what replaces the analogue 7,9,10
channels when they go off air in 2014. There's room for another 12
digital channels there, or perhaps finally space for 'real' HD? Naah,
that's expecting too much. It will be 3D by then.

I believe the plan is to auction off the analog TV spectrum, so there's
no guarantee it will be used for FTA TV, in fact, I believe it's highly
    unlikely.

I'm curious as to who would want to buy it, and how it would be used.
Presumably we would be able to access it.

OTOH, I don't believe that in the US anyone has bought their analog TV
    spectrum; I may be wrong.

The top 100MHz or so (700MHz band) has been transferred to Land Mobile
    radio services in the USA.
We might do the same I suppose although we already have a few digital
    tv channels operating there.

Channel 9A used to be an aircraft navigation frequency (DME-A 206MHz)
and is now the digital radio segment. However, the main channels of 7,
9, 10 would be interleaved with the digital channels so it is more
likely they would remain as tv channels. I would expect each of the
networks to maintain hold of these channels and open further digital
services. Somewhere in ACMA there must be a policy paper.

I don't know why the existing FTA networks would want to pay for more
digital services. Where would the content come from?

Although that only talks about the UHF band. That still leaves the VHF
bands used in most capital cities. I think they may be earmarked for
    other usage though.

It was only a matter of time before some stupid bitch would bring up
the sexist remark. Clearly this ill-informed twit is ok with all those
female specific channels on cable and not to mention trashy channels
    like "W" on Fox.

Just forget the facts eh ?

Admittedly, the name of this new channel is stupid and shows a serious
lack of thought by the boneheads at SeVen. Perhaps they should have
    gone with

    7THREE ??

Many thanks for the info, Brad.

In no particular order : -
    1. That's the 700MHz segment that I was talking about. It would be
interesting to see how they carve it up and eliminate co-channel
interference. Many of the digital tv services in the Wollongong/
Illawarra area are in that segment.

    2. Where would the content come from? 200+ USA tv channels, Lord knows
how many UK and other English speaking services are out there
(assuming English remains a priority, I'm surprised there aren't more
Arabic channels in the Sydney region) and 50+ years of television and
100 years of movies. They aren't short of content!

Yes, but sooner or later the NBN or something similar will make all of
it available as download on demand. Television as we know it is a
sunset industry. In the future the only content suitable for
broadcasters will be real time events: news and sport. Everything else
is more suitable for download, once network bandwidth is improved.
TEN's strategy reflects this: ONE for sport, more news on TEN, move
traditional content to ELEVEN and get CBS to share the cost.
Regardless of the quality of their programming, which I think is
abysmal, TEN's long-term strategy is the correct one. The management
at Seven and Nine seem to be utterly clueless.
