Computer auto shuts down when cold booting
I've got a very annoying "feature" on my homebuilt PC--every time I
cold boot the system, it shuts down after 1-2 seconds. After
researching this issue on newsgroups I discovered that if I pulled out
the CMOS battery and put it back in, my PC would start without a
hitch. I can even warm boot it now without any problems. I've even
managed to start it on occasion when I power down and restart.
However, I am getting very weary of opening the case and resetting the
battery every time I need to cold boot my PC (thank god I have a
Lian-Li case so it's a major hassle to get in there).
I would feel much better if I at least knew exactly WHAT is causing
this to happen. Is it bad interaction with the mboard and the power
supply, or the cpu fan, or what? And is there something I can disable
in the CMOS so that this doesn't happen? Should I be returning one of
my components? I plan on buying a quieter CPU fan, will this possible
make the problem go away?
I've got the following configuration:
Lian Li P60 case
D875PBZ Intel motherboard
Pentium 4 2.6 GHz with 800MHz bus
stock cpu fan
Thermaltake Silent PurePower 420W power supply

<cold boot the system, it shuts down after 1-2 seconds>
doesn't make it to OS right?

by removing the battery and unplugging the power cord?
if the cmos is in fact being reset by just removing the battery, then that would mean that a 'default setting allows the boot.
the only things off hand I can think of that may change between boots would be
detection of the hard drives if they were set to user maybe and not auto detect
improper ID of the CPU and voltages. which could over drive the cpu and cause an overheat shut down
