    Strange slow down

I have XP PRO, 2ghz chip. 512 RAM, Fast HDs. Recently defraged.

I was putting in some older drives to check on whats on them. One was
jumper to master and it confused XP which then refused to run or boot
    up.
I had a very recently complete backup so ghosted that over and
everything seemed to be back to normal.

The next day after turning on the computer, it was extremely sluggish.
Sometimes clicking on email/icons etc would do nothing, other times
    things openned but very slowly.

So I check everything running, running processes, ran spybot, found a
few things, rebooted but it was the same.
Then after a few minutes or so, it started running normally.

Worked all day but this morning the same problem. And again after
about 5 minutes it was running normally again.

I don't know if you have Norton Antivirus installed, but there were some
issues with one of the latest live updates clashing with MS office apps.
Sorry, but I am a bit sketchy on details (old age creeping up), so if that
sounds in any way familiar that could be your problem.

Yes I have NAV. Of course don't want to turn it off. No Office aps
    overtly open.
