For your PC needs
I have/had an Athlon XP 2100 system on an FIC MB with onboard raid 0.
The raid consists of two 120 gig IDE drives. There are 2 other
internal 120s, one with Win XP Home and the other for backup, but not
of the Raid stuff.. The raid is full of original DV files, some of
them edited and some waiting for editing.
1. This system won't post and needs rebuilding.
2. I'm broke
3. I, ummm, borrowed my wifes laptop as a stopgap.
I have a Maxtor 250 gig external which backs up the Raid stuff. I
hooked it up to the laptop and started working with it. It was fine
for a couple of days. Then windows shut down on me with one of those
"we are protecting your computer" messages. On rebooting Checkdisk ran
on the Maxtor and then windows loaded. But the Maxtor can't be read.
In device manager it looks Ok in that it says the device is working
poroperly. But the property sheet shows it consists of Raw data and no
NTFS.
So I now want to tread very lightly with my wife's machine. I was
thinking of building a fairly modest system in the 2600 to 3000 range
on a good, solid MB with lots of extras ( audio, USB 2.0, Firewire,
networking, raid, etc.) and using the drives from the 2100 if I can. I
would use this machine for Video editing for now. Then maybe this
summer build a higher end machine with the new technologies that
should be more mainstream by then. If I do that I would use the
2600-3000 machine more or less as a file server/backup system.
Any suggestions for the modest build?
Now comes the hard part. I would love to recover the files on either
the raid drives or the Maxtor. If I plug the raid drives into the new
MB, will they work? For the Maxtor what software is good for data
recovery? I won't mess with the Maxtor until I have a rebuilt machine
that is up, thoroughly tested and running well.
