hmmm ive been playing a whole bunch of different games recently

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfare 2 was a bargain on PC, and after reading how its one of those more hardcore tactical shooters, i was convinced. Its a good game. much better than the 360 version, mainly because its totally different. Story is gay and a waste of time, so are the stereotypical characters etc. But the gadgets, graphics, effects and gameplay are all pretty top-notch IMO. I particularly like the ability to view your surrounding area of about 50m squared in extreme detail. It gives away enemy positions that you cant see, which makes things pretty easy actually. Kinda feel like your cheating. But then, when youre walking in an open area and a sniper comes out of hiding and takes down your entire team, it feels kinda justified. Those bloody snipers ****ing hide in some great places and then just spring out of nowhere. Gamespot said this game had a punishing difficulty, but i havent really noticed. As long as you dont play it like a standard FPS, you should be ok. But im only like 3 levels into it, so what do I know.

Flashback with Colin McRae rally 3. After puchasing Dirt 2 on PS3 (more on that in a minute), i needed a decent rally game to play. The dirt of the greek islands, the overcast of London, the snow of sweden and the rain of Japan. ahhhh its good to be home. I actually got this game thinking it was one i used to play at my cousins house as a kid, but i used to play 4 not 3, so it took me a while to figure out that all these things i was expecting to see weren't actually there. Oh well. its a good game. very tough. very very tough. First season was easy. Messed up my car by the end of each day and still managed to place fairly well. Then 2nd season, and i got pumped. Reflexes and parts choice are crucial. My one complaint, is the extremely obvious feel that the car doesnt feel connected to the road. you try to turn right and the car is unrealistically responsive. Throw it into a corner too hard, too fast and it just slides and you just hit a tree. The race is ruined. you stuffed up. now go cry yourself to sleep.

Stupid man at EB games convinced me that Dirt 2 is better than Dirt 1 should have listened to my friend. oh well. only got it 2nd hand too, ill trade it someday. Ok, so the game is just really really really queer. Not sure if many of you know what some people deem as "baditude" in games, where its just lame ass "we're hip and cool, with graffiti and our hats sideways" sort of thing, but this game is onto the next stage. DC Shoe Hire stickers everywhere and i think that says it all. This whole X-treem sports meets motorsport is a terrible fashion. its all Ken Block's fault i heard he went into the WRC. good for him, but i hope he gets eaten alive. The racing is actually kinda fun. The feel of the terrain, the jumps and crashes all pretty good. The different modes keep it interesting (even though the buggies are a pain in the ass to drive). The whole idea of making "friends" on the track is such a wank. You hit someone and theyre like "woah, man. whats wrong with you??" and you just want to hit them again, or force them into a pole or something. Race drivers being able to talk to one another just makes the races feel rigged. From a spectators perspective. When I think of what makes a good race game, I (and probably everybody else) think that a decent selection of cars is important. Dirt2 has a decent selection of cars, but the cars that claim to be faster are more difficult to drive (in general, not just when youre going fast). I used some of the mountains of money i had made to buy a new rally car (only cause it looked better and claimed to be faster, even though the first car i got given proved to be more than capable of beating other cars) and at first it was all good, then i did one rally stage where somewhere towards the end of the track I would lose control and total the car. Try again. Somewhere else I destroy the car. Rewind (forgot to mention if you stuff up you can rewind and replay, fixing your mistake without restarting the race. I didnt like it at first, but its not too bad), rewind again, more rewinding, and by the time i eventually make it to the finish line, my time isnt good enough because i went too slow to try not to crash. hmm difficulty too high perhaps? errrr no. I swap back to my first car which was "slower" and i decimated the course on my first try no crashes, no rewinds and i beat my best time by 10 secs. wtf why would a game make that possible. Some of the big trucks you drive have only 3-4 gears of whatever, so buying a new one gives you 6, which is nice, but other than that there is absolutely no incentive to use up all your cash on buying cars.

ummm, what else have i got...

Had this weird dream some night about zombies and stuff. wasnt very pleasant because, well you know, end of the world and stuff (though i wasnt a character in the dream, i was just spectating) and it made me want to get a zombie game and go nuts. I am still waiting for a zombie game to be crowned the most amazing zombie game created for the next 20 years and be incredible, so i thought for the time being Left For Dead 2 will have to do for now. Not incredible, but it fills the void of wanting to kill endless zombies. (are we just all sickos who have passed the stage of desensitisation from movies and games and moved onto the next stage of actually just wanting to kill things?? maybe.). And for $50 off steam, i thought what the hey. So after taking 5mins to uncensor the game from Aus censorship, the game was ready to be played. Its pretty good. Online is fun when youre not playing with gimps or actually get to join a match. I am yet to see my game pick up more than 3 matches to join even though the game tells me +6000 people are playing the game currently. Im guessing its an Oz thing. So yeah, the game is pretty fun. Same ol' 4 people vs. zombies and same nu' 4 special zombies. The levels add some variety, but i dunno... theres something about the fact all the levels are available from the beginning kinda ruins it. I tried to play all the campaigns chronologically in single-player, but multiplayer is just so much more fun so i kinda stopped. There isnt much of a storyline, but even after a few hours of play i cant tell you where they went to and why and in what order. People online seem to like to play the same levels. They all seem kinda good to me. Was also a shame they tried to stop cheats being used all together. It'd be nice if you host a game that you can chose, and if people dont want it, they can just piss off to another game. Instead you have to hack the game in order start your own little offline server and cheat there. spawning hundreds of zombies. which is awesome.

Lastly, ive been playing Napoleon: Total War. Was $60 at JB so i was like hells yeah. Havent played it too much but it taken a while to get used to. I never played Empire: Total War, which is extremely similar apparently, so ive come from Medieval 2. and its great to see the changes in diplomacy and AI on the battle map. As for AI during a battle, well not much has changed. But with Line Infantry warfare, theres new tactics to learn and employ and different styles of play so its great. There also a lot more fun to be had with the campaign map now since theyve employed a Age Of Kings-esque technology tree, which is EXTREMELY welcome. Buildings need to be researched and now you can decrease upkeep costs and stuff, so its nice being able to upgrade in total war. so nice. One bad thing ive noticed so far though, in custom battle theres no completely flat grassy plain theres one thats close, but its got trees and stuff. thats not good enough. there has to be a at least one empty map used to have some fun. Oh and also, you cant pick the exact amount of money you can have to spend in custom battles. which sucks. ergh. If it was an online match, yeah fair enough, but when im picking my opponents army anyway, sif it matters hwo much money they have...

I've played left 4 dead 2 recently (uncensored). I think the introduction of melee weapons made the game way more timid. I think the first one had a much greater impact than the second. With the first, your limited in your ability to defend from a swarm by your ability to unload a single pistol into a mob of zombies. With left 4 dead 2, if you simply have a frying pan or a Katana (described in Max Brooks Zombie Survival Guide as the best melee defence against zombies) you have the ability to kill multiple opponents and are virtually guaranteed to defend yourself from the swarm. The thought that you could lose in the battle made it much more thrilling.

i know what you mean, but you can only kill a couple of zombies per sweep, the rest just get pushed back like you hit them with your weapon. which i think is fair. it makes up for lack of range. depends on whether youre out in the open or in close quarters depends on if you take melee or pistol. magnum or twin pistols. just 1 is terrible.

I just finished Mass Effect 2 recently. Quite a good game but too many long cut scenes. Also, all of those conversations got a bit boring. I played ME2 right after ME1 and I found the weapons/armour upgrade process in ME2 a bit dumbed down. On the other hand the hacking process was much better for ME2.

    Spoiler! highlight to see
In the final battle I managed to lose Thane and Jack. Not sure what I could have dome differently to save them. Did get some action with Miranda though . What a babe.

I'm now playing Alien vs Predator. Finished the missions as a marine and now just started on the missions as Predator. Pretty cool game actually. It has a great spooky feel walking around in dim light with aliens around every corner. Feels like the movie.

Apparently they have no face-hugers in the new AvP. Making the game that less scary.

if you mean inventory wise, yeah, defs lacking some choices. Moral options/decisions? its just like every other game where youre given a choice with 1-2 outcomes and sometimes you gotta think about it, but most of the time all youre thinking about is how its going to affect your character of what upgrades/money you might get. I think Heavy Rain is great for pushing the boundries of concequences for gaming. If your character at the time dies, they stay dead for the rest of the game

But your actions don't seem to change the storyline. You just get to be an arsehole or a saint in certain conversations.

I can't just decide to kill Aria and then have that affect the game.

There's also only really one quest you pursue at any one time. Doesn't give you the feeling of self determination you get in games like Gothic and Fallout 3.

Heh. I never said I was time poor, just that I wouldn't have the time for the "dating scene". In that context, wouldn't have the time is code for couldn't be bothered. I'd rather a couple of hours in front of an XBox over a painfull and awkard first date any time. You know, those dates where you know within the first 10 minutes that you are totally incompatible and it's all going nowhere but you still have a whole evening to fill in to avoid being rude?

The AvP I'm playing (developed by Rebellion for PC years ago and released in 2009 for XBox) has face-huggers. Little shits are hard to spot too. What's the new AvP you're referring to? Did it come out recently or is it on another platform?

Doom '95 and I have Final Doom,Doom 2 and another Doom disk chock full of wads.

I just insert them all into the same Doom 2 folder and play for hours (actually days) on end.

Makes a nice change from always playing the ultra high end games.

Been playing Darksiders on PC for a bit now (after getting it real cheap on sale earlier in 2014, through Steam) and have really enjoyed it.

Am about 4/5 of the way through – am impressed with how the progression goes, how it guides you in various aspects but still retains mystery, and the graphics & landscapes look real sweet.

Am enjoying most of the puzzles being fairly easy, as I'd prefer to relax & enjoy the game at a steady pace rather than be too frustrated too often.

Have also bought Darksiders 2 even cheaper on some steam sale recently, so will get into that later after completing this.

Extremely good value for money after getting it real cheap, wouldv'e been pretty happy still paying more for it probably.

    Very good.

    ---

Yea, playing Darksiders 2 now, about 1/3 of the way through it or something – yea, quite liking it!
Both Darksiders 1 & 2 have been very impressive for mine – many things done well for gamer enjoyment.

Also have noticed some subtle references / part-similarities to certain characters/beasts/aspects of various fantasy stories I've read, e.g. the Shannara, Eddings & Magician series books (can't think of exact examples right now, but I recall being impressed and glad to experience a subtle similarity to some memories of those at certain times in these games) – interesting.

    Highly recommended!
I wonder what other similar games there are out there?

"Bought Darksiders (~mid 2014, retail disk on sale cheap @ a games shop) then Darksiders 2 (in Aug 2014 on sale real cheap through Steam), for PC. "

"Finished Darksiders 2 on Easy (again, taking my time, looking for & trying to complete many side-quests etc.) then progressed to it's second play-through on normal, finishing it in ~149hrs.

Both Darksiders & Darksiders 2 represent EXCELLENT value for money when purchased on sale cheap, I'd even go so far as to say DS2 is worth the RRP when it came out.
Please let there be a Darksiders 3."
