Finished an r1 of Targets: the Peter Bogdanovich film with Boris Karloff. Nice contrast between the old horror (and recognizable monsters) that Karloff represents and the new horror as rooted in inexplicable, random crime (in the form of a youth turned sniper - inspired by the real life case of Charles Whitman). Considering the current cases of freeway snipers in the USA, this 1968 film still had a punch.

Just finished watching the Indian film The Terrorist, courtesy of a trade with ericb.

Was a bloody great film, which surprised me. Despite what the lead character stood for, you always felt a deal of support and affection towards the character.

Beautifully filmed, many of the scenery shots, reminded me of Tarkovsky's Stalker; and some of the eerie music reminded me of the same film.

Definitely one film worth of checking out for fans of a good story and great characters. The DVD sorely needs 5.1, but the film is what matters here.

Just watched the new special edition version of john carpenters Escape from new york .It's been a long time since i've seen it and the first time in widescreen with remastered 5.1 sound.
I dont think you could get a movie of this vintage looking or sounding any better than this so hats off to all involed in the production of the dvd.
I dont think it's my fav movie from the post apocalytic era of films from the 80's but it's still alot better than most modern movies from this genre and well worth adding to a collection.

That's a film I enjoy tremendously: probably the John Carpenter film I keep returning to most of all. I have the single disc release but still intend to get the Special Edition when the opportunity arises (I'm really curious about the deleted scene).

Had the pleasure of watching the UNDEAD region 4 DVD today and it was well worth the wait. I've only viewed the movie and a few of the extras so far, but it's all good.
For those of you who aren't aware, the movie is a fun Australian made zombie movie that has a bit of a different twist and a comic slant to it.
Special effects, characters, acting (some of it hilariously over the top) and the story aren't too bad at all and the extras are interesting and show how a pair of brothers did such an excellent job with low funds as well as managing to do their editing and 95% of their special effects on home computers and a laptop.

I just watched The road home starring the sublime Zhang Ziyi .
This stunningly beautiful movie directed by Zhang Yimou (of raise the red lantern fame) tells the story of a young illiterate girl from a small town who falls for a teacher appointed to educate the local children.
Zhang ziyi is the perfect actress to convey a girl falling in love so hard that it hurts!Glorius cinematography and one of the greatest movie scores i have ever heard in my life also help to lift this movie above the ordinary and into a true work of art on every level.
    In a word superb!

I've recently seen A Mighty Wind, it's an okay movie. Quite a funny one actually, it's about a reunion for some of these oldies folk music people.
Stars Catherine O'Hara, if you remember her from Home Alone, she's the mother of Kevin and a few actors here and there. Some new faces also which really adds to the uniqueness of this movie.

I love that movie eric, it's been a long time since I've seen it but if it's out for sale I didn't know it was out. But I'll be looking for it after Christmas.

Shy, I think it is only available in R1(well at least the 2 disk SE of it anyway), but considering that it is a MGM title and that MGM are going to be releasing there own titles in Feb(previoulsy Fox in Aust. released MGM titles like James Bond etc), there is a decent chance that it may get a local release in 2004.

Galaxy Quest, it's good that I didn't think it would be any good because then it's a pleasent surprise to watch it and love the movie. It's a sit back relax and get laughs ( and some siffles from a couple of sad bits ) , so I think well done with that one.

I'm glad MGM are releasing their own, might lessen the chance of those titles getting bloody disc rot..
