    Germany's Disastrous "Investment" In Solar

Despite the massive investment, solar power accounts for only about 0.3 per
    cent of Germany's total energy.

This is one of the key reasons why Germans now pay the second-highest price
for electricity in the developed world (exceeded only by Denmark, which aims
to be the "world wind-energy champion")....

That's not all. Bjorn Lomborg now explains just what a useless money-pit
Germany's solar power program has become:

Germany once prided itself on being the "photovoltaic world champion",
doling out generous subsidies totalling more than $US130 billion to citizens
to invest in solar energy, according to Germany's Ruhr University.

But now the German government is vowing to cut the subsidies sooner than
planned and to phase out support over the next five years. What went wrong?.

Using their government's generous subsidies, Germans installed 7.5 gigawatts
of photovoltaic capacity last year, more than double what the government
deemed "acceptable". It is estimated this will lead to a $US260 ($243) hike
in the average consumer's annual power bill.

Unfortunately, ...while sunlight is free, panels and installation are not.

Solar power is at least four times more costly than energy produced by
fossil fuels. It also has the distinct disadvantage of not working at night,
    when much electricity is consumed.

On short, overcast winter days, Germany's 1.1 million solar-power systems
generate no electricity. The country is then forced to import considerable
amounts of electricity from nuclear power plants in France and the Czech
    Republic.

Indeed, despite the massive investment, solar power accounts for only about
0.3 per cent of Germany's total energy.

This is one of the key reasons why Germans now pay the second-highest price
for electricity in the developed world (exceeded only by Denmark, which aims
to be the "world wind-energy champion")....

Moreover, this sizeable investment does remarkably little to counter global
    warming.

When the effects are calculated in a standard climate model, the result is a
reduction in average temperature of one twenty-thousandth of a degree
    celsius.

By the end of the century, Germany's $US130bn solar panel subsidies will
have postponed temperature increases by 23 hours.

"It is a remarkable fact that despite the worldwide expenditure of perhaps
US$50 billion since 1990, and the efforts of tens of thousands of scientists
worldwide, no human climate signal has yet been detected that is distinct
    from natural variation."

Bob Carter, Research Professor of Geology, James Cook University, Townsville

"A major problem has been the co-option of climate science by politics,
ambition, greed, and what seems to be a hereditary human need for a
    righteous cause."

ample, secure funding at the same time?"

William Happer, Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics, Princeton

"The claim is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8ºK in
about 150 years, which, if true, means to me that the temperature has been
amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely
    improved in this 'warming' period,".

"Computer models are built in an almost backwards fashion: The goal is to
show evidence of AGW, and the "scientists" go to work to produce such a
result. When even these models fail to show what advocates want, the data

Before attacking hypothetical problems, let us first solve the real problems
that threaten humanity. One single water pump at an equivalent cost of a

    A completely different interpretation here:
    http://www.businessweek.com/news/201...imit-boom.html

".....Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Germany, the world’s biggest market for
solar power, plans record reductions in subsidies for the industry as
part of a program to rein in a boom in installations....."

".....Chancellor Angela Merkel, encouraging renewable energy to
replace nuclear power stations that close by 2022, wants to chop in
half annual solar installations after incentives for the industry
    pushed capacity past government targets..."

"...Officials responsible for setting subsidy levels across Europe
have struggled to keep up as the price of solar equipment tumbled in

IOW, the subsidies offered to stimulate mass production of low cost
solar panels have been completely successful.

".....solar PV provided 18 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in

"....The German government has set a target of 66 GW of installed
solar PV capacity by 2030, to be reached with an annual increase of
    2.5–3.5 GW...."

Of course, this is just the spin put on it by the pinko editors
    at businessweek.

Another problem that has to be taken seriously is a slow rise of sea level
which could become catastrophic if it continues to accelerate. We have
accurate measurements of sea level going back 200 years. We observe a
steady rise from 1800 to the present, with an acceleration during the last
50 years. It is widely believed that the recent acceleration is due to
human activities, since it coincides in time with the rapid increase of carbon
    dioxide in the atmosphere.
