    HSU Research STF-2 subwoofer?

Thinking of getting a subwoofer around the $1000 mark.....read alot of good things about HSU Research subs and the STF-2 seems to fit the bill.....anyone had any experience with this subwoofer? Or the similar VTF-2? Compared it to other subwoofers?

    Thanks :)

I cannot comment about the HSU sub but I can tell you about an alternative.

For some time I had been looking for a project based on the Peerless 12" XLS
driver. When I was eventually ready to go (i.e. sold the old sub) I found 2
designs for sealed enclosures using the Peerless driver. These are found at
    http://members.ozemail.com.au/~joeras/sub_index.htm
    http://www.linkwitzlab.com/thor-intro.htm

The boxes are similar in volume with the main difference being the plate amp
on the local (Critical Q) design versus the electronic crossover (with
external amp) for the Linkwitz Lab design. I opted to go with the local
design and chose the "Audiophile LF" version. All up cost was around $800.
Performance is outstanding. If you are able to do the cabinet making and
confident about modifying the plate amp this will deliver you results you
will find hard to match in a commercial design.

Now if you really want to get into DIY, have a look at the Orion project at
the Linkwitz site. This is what I am doing next.

    hi,

i have a VTF2, it was about $1200-VERY happy with it

I can recommend this unit highly

the STF2 seems to be basically the same
it's just that you don't have the two 'modes' to choose from

very good sub for the price (I was looking at subs up to $2000)
