    But WCDMA (UMTS) is a 3G access technology.

    My understanding from Aldi was that their service would not work on
    UMTS; maybe I have this wrong?

    I notice they fall back a lot to 3G, which my Telstra sim did on only
    rare occasions.

    I'm not sure what you mean by "fall back to 3G".

    Maybe you mean fall back to basic UMTS from one of its
    higher-speed variants. Like HSDPA, HSPA+ or DC_HSPA+ All those
    are just various rates of 3G.

    It's normal for a device on the Telstra network to drop back to
    basic UMTS when no data is being transferred.
