Should the Tigers win today against Carlton (and they should, just on
current form) then they actually need to lose the following week against
Sydney to ensure that their long-term prospects are enhanced.
About the worst thing that could happen to Richmond is to make the
Preliminary Final match against Fremantle and - most likely - get thumped.
In the last two finals' campaigns Richmond were embarrassed in their
Preliminary Final defeats and chose to ignore this clear indication of
their inadequacies because the rare finals win that got them there was
A win today and an upset win next week risks the club (again) getting
carried away with its actual on-field level in the AFL and deferring or
ignoring long-term changes that must continue to enhance the chances of
The last thing Richmond needs is the deluded attitude of "We only need to
top-up to be a real contender" which will again arise in the supporter
base and in the soft-heads inside the club, that path has proved
disastrous in the past and if it happens again chances are the results
will be just as bad now.
Just play a couple of decent finals matches, identify the obvious
deficiencies in the current list (still too many soft "Downhill skiers"
with disposal skills not up to scratch and no decent CHF that can
consistently worry an opposition), continue to recruit and delist without
starry-eyed delusion and the club may well make the finals again - and
things will be ok.
