    Why Richmond need to lose....

    ....next week.

Should the Tigers win today against Carlton (and they should, just on
current form) then they actually need to lose the following week against
Sydney to ensure that their long-term prospects are enhanced.

About the worst thing that could happen to Richmond is to make the
Preliminary Final match against Fremantle and - most likely - get thumped.
In the last two finals' campaigns Richmond were embarrassed in their
Preliminary Final defeats and chose to ignore this clear indication of
their inadequacies because the rare finals win that got them there was
    over-emphasised.

A win today and an upset win next week risks the club (again) getting
carried away with its actual on-field level in the AFL and deferring or
ignoring long-term changes that must continue to enhance the chances of
    improvement.

The last thing Richmond needs is the deluded attitude of "We only need to
top-up to be a real contender" which will again arise in the supporter
base and in the soft-heads inside the club, that path has proved
disastrous in the past and if it happens again chances are the results
will be just as bad now.

Just play a couple of decent finals matches, identify the obvious
deficiencies in the current list (still too many soft "Downhill skiers"
with disposal skills not up to scratch and no decent CHF that can
consistently worry an opposition), continue to recruit and delist without
starry-eyed delusion and the club may well make the finals again - and
    things will be ok.

Rubbish. They need to lose this week, so they don't pass Fitzroy's
tally of finals in the past three decades.

But I really don't care; either way, the "supporters" of the losing
team today will absolutely rip their club a new one, and amuse everyone
    else.

Well, no excuses now for not addressing these same deficiencies that lost
us the game today - along with being out-coached AGAIN after half-time.

Congratulations to Carlton for showing that desperation of the whole team
when things get tough is necessary to win big matches, but commiserations
to them for now being served up as the AFL sacrifice to Sydney.

Richmond provides the funnies, yet again. They thought they'd beaten
the curse of ninth this year!

Just out of general interest, do you have stats on "9th again"?
I'm curious is all. I like quirky stats.

Yeah, Commetti's comment on the irony of being beaten by a side that came 9th was a classic.

Like the fact that North have finished 9th the same amount of times
Richmond have over the past decade or so?

The "9th" myth is just another out of date stereotype that gets trotted
out whenever someone wants a Richmond bash.

Carlton are an average side but today all our good players played well and
when that happens we are competitive.
Richmond took their foot off the pedal and when you're playing against
blokes like Murphy, Judd and Gibbs it's a very dangerous thing to do, all
they needed to do was keep up their workrate and they would have played
    Carlton out of the game.
Finish 9th and end up ahead of Collingwood, Richmond and Essendon,
    football's a funny game.

Ok, I was just wondering if it had any basis in fact or whether it was
    just a saying. Thanks
