Which RECEIVER out of these ?

I am about to purchase my first Home Theatre set up ...and have narrowed
down a few options for my ( modest ) budget.

Please let me know your opinions here :

Firstly I'm looking at getting this "Pure Acoustics" EX650 speaker package
( front, rear, centre ) : see here http://www.aussiehifitraders.com.au/ or
    http://www.pure-acoustics.com/design...ml/ex_650f.htm

Then looking at either of these receivers...depending on the bargain i can
    get :

PIONEER VSX-D512-K ( only at the right price )

Pioneer Receiver VSX 301( can get this for around $300 )

ONKYO TX-SR500 ( only at the right price )

    Sony STR-DE335

Note, my current LG DVD player only has digital / optical outputs, not the
seperate analogue onse...so receiver would need to be compatible...or it's a
    new DVD player too !

    cheers,

Just bought a pair of front Pure Acoustics Tower Speakers off eBay, fab sound and not expensive. I have had a Sony STDRE875 amp for 2 years, it works well. Component players are as cheap as chips, heard the Sony think 575 model is good with progressive scan and would work with Sony amp only about $200.

I am a Sony owner and have to say I am disappointed with the sound
quaility of the STR-DE range of AV amps. I think for the extra $100-150
you are way better to spend the money on the QS range. ie STR-DB790 etc

Much cleaner sound, better circuitry, better inputs, high watts across
    all channels etc etc

For price range. Get a secondhand receiver like Denon, Sony (QS),
Yamaha etc. You would be better off for it.

    Hi Brian,
The QX series, Tower speakers stand about 1m high, bloody great I tell you, and hooked up to my big powerful amp the clear sound blew my mates out the door.

They look better with the front cloth off showing the speakers and the "2 pack" black finish on the front. Cost me a mere $250 + freight, an absolute bargain.

Already have Sony DAV series 100W RMS sub, centre and rears but after hearing these beauties going after them in same brand too.

For Home Theatre to get the Cinema like sound you NEED a subwoofer, so plan
to get one at some stage. Also you will find with the lower spec
amps/receivers they don't have the grunt to drive large mains to decent
levels in the lower sound octaves. Generally with lower spec amp/receivers
you are better off with a satellite + sub combo for HT use, especially if
you want to listen at reference levels (problem is any sub worth using start
at $850 unless you build your own) - most mag reviewers suggest this when
    peforming equipment reviews.

From your selection it looks like you have a limit of about $1,000 for your
    setup. I suggest:
    1. Try pick up a 2nd hand 5.1 channel Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, Marantz AV
receiver (ebay, trading post etc - they can be hard to give away 2nd hand so
offer low prices)- most of these have coaxial and optical digital inputs so
you can connect your existing DVD player straight into them and the AV
reciver does the decoding. Personally I don't like the sound of the low-mid
end Sonys as they are 'Sony' sound, go do a listen test and you will hear
the difference - maybe it will suit your tastes but in my case it didn't.
Remember too that certain brands also over rate their power specs so don't
discount a 50W Onkyo too quickly as it is most probably more capable than a
110W advertised Sony. With the Pioneer - my 1st pro-logic receiver was a
Pioneer and it gave me many years and parties of use (they did tend to over
    rate their specs though).

    2. Pure Acoustics are not listed at review sites like www.audioreview.com
(strange for an American product) - so in terms of performance and
importantly backup and support - your call. Maybe look at a sat+sub combo
instead - you will most probaly get a better HT result. Depemding on your
room size you will need a sub with a 8" - 12" driver.

    3. Have you considered your other needs are like:
    a) Video switching(composite, s-video or component),
    b) Number of digital inputs required for current and future devices ,like
digital tv set top box, dvd player, MD player etc.
    c) Pre-inputs for SACD or DVD-Audio

    Hope this help

Thanks for all that advice..all taken in too..

Another brand of speaker I'm looking at ( here in melb ) are "AVC", I can
get the mid sized 5.1 surround set up for a great price...it has 2 x 5"
speakers in the centre + tweeter, 1 x the same in the surrounds, and same
again in the towers, though they look more like 6" or bigger speakers...and
a port hole in the bottom...plus a sub too !

They sounded really good...nice mid range presents in the centre for the
dialog...and all the usual big lows & and sizzling tops all around..

looks like I might go with the pioneer VSX-D512 receiver...nice power
etc..all at a bargain price too..!
