They offered to repaint only the damaged panel David.
    That's what I meant.

Customer satisfaction surveys only serve one purpose. To make happy people even
happier, and stupid unhappy people think the company is actually going to do
    something to improve their service.

Im sure I had a rear wheel bearing die on me as well (MY99 impreza!)

I could tell you my big horror story with Tynan subaru and their rush
it service but I wont bother.

    summuary:
    Big dent,
    scratches
poorly aligned hatch when the hinges it was replaced.
instrument panel so badly aligned that the green indicator arrow was
    hidden behind the cowl.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the Outback. I found Subaru Australia
to be generally helpful when I whined to them a few months ago about my 3rd
rear wheel bearing failure (its out of warranty). Mind you they didn't go so
far as to admit that wheel bearing failures are common on early model
Imprezas and Foresters. They did offer to share some of the repair cost
    though.

I now take my car to a 4x4 centre that has a couple of Subaru specialist
mechanics. You'll pay through the nose if you keep taking it to Subaru.

I'll be looking to buy a new car in the next few months and it will most
likely be another Subaru. Other than the wheel bearing issues the car has
had nothing else go wrong with it (5 yrs, 80 000 klms).

    Cheers

Why would it need a new paint job? Only the affected panels would need to
    be resprayed.

    MR JP.
It saddens me that you are so right! The apathy and ignorance of
people is so prevalent throughout all the "walks of life" and most
services that you come across in your daily grind. We all come to
expect it and accept it as a norm.
That is the reason why I don't want any further dealings with the
Subaru. I don't want them touching/repainting my car. I am certain
that if they do, more damage will be done. This time I am going to
walk away and hope that the next person who gets badly done by them
might take it further and actually teach them a lesson.

Ignorance and slipshod attitude are here to stay....
    Regrettably...

Other than a oil change which a friend does [i watch and drink his beer] it
has never been back to Nissan, these guys will sting your wallet and do a
pox job to boot.As you have unfortunatly experienced.......

Having said that the said Nissan dealer "loaned" a customers Patrol to a
employee for the weekend [it req a clutch and other so they kept it a few
    days]

The customer found out [was infact used to tow a boat to a beach house!]
took the dealer to court and got a brand spanking Patrol as comp.

Got worse, the story made the media, this and another few things got the
said dealer head honcho get his franchise terminated from Nissan. To save
    face he sold the dealership.....

New Subaru Outback -> how bad can the first service be! (longish)

Hi. My new 2004 model Subaru Outback was due for its first service.
Without much hesitation I took it to my local Subaru dealer (Subaru
Mentone). After all who would take a better care of my car than my
    local Subaru dealer!
Well few hours later I went to pickup my car up after the service
manager called me to say that it was ready. As the service manager
drove the car out, I noticed on the front right hand guard two large
scratches (5cm and 3 cm long). The scratches are fairly deep and
obviously caused by someone working on the car from the side or
    someone's "don't care" attitude.

To say that I was upset would be an understatement. The first response
I got was: "The scratches must have been there before!" (Absolute lie)
But they looked so fresh that the service manager couldn't argue with
me! Anyway, he tried cleaning them out with some cleaning agent, which
did nothing. To his credit, he offered me to come back the next
morning to have his detailer fix (if possible) the damage. So back I
went only to be told that the detailer "called in sick". I wasn't
going to take no for an answer. The "preferred" panel shop down the
road got most of the scratches out. I was also offered a new paint job
which I refused. I don't want my 2,000km old car to be stripped,
    repainted and most likely ill-assembled!

I know that accidents like that do happen. But what really bothers me
is the "don't care attitude". I will never go to Subaru Mentone ever
again, but where do I take my car for its next service? Can anyone
recommend Subaru dealer in Melbourne that cares for their customer's
    vehicle?

Funny enough, this morning I had a follow up call from Subaru
Australia, to see if I was happy with my first service. (routine
call). Well I told them all that happened and got absolutely no
response. The person on the phone also didn't care.....

This time I was not surprised!

    Yeah great....

    Predictable...

    > But they looked so fresh that the service manager couldn't argue with

    Good...

Anyway, he tried cleaning them out with some cleaning agent, which

This 'fix' is more a masking intended for only very minor surface marks....

    At the beach....

    But still noticable, right?

Not bad, an offer, could have been the option to choose, particularly if the
paint is easy enough to match. This means downtime for you.

The 'don't care' attitude you highlight manifests itself in vitrually every
business venture in Australia (thinks Foxtel), it is purely symptomatic of
greater societal issues within individuals. Manners aren't taught anymore
and we've whole generations of extremely selfish people, we see this
reflected everyday on the roads throughout the country, often leading to
crashes and the usual consequences. People are pissed off - feel badly done
by, either by law or individuals, right or wrong to be, they 'are',-
    regardless.

You must not therefore take that as a personal direct affront, it's not, its
everywhere, I believe perversely because some people 'like' being that
    way???

    Can anyone
    > recommend Subaru dealer in Melbourne that cares for their customer's

You could goto a workshop outside Subaru and keep your warranty..... There
is NO guarantee this sort of annoyance will not happen again.

    Nope.....

You must 'demand' it be as new I'm afraid, don't overlook the offer -
discuss it further, ask questions, unless your happy as is.

Then buy a warning triangle from Hella a EU/World type, Part No. '2901'
    (bout $47). Hella
Australia - Ph: 1800 061 729. Stores in boot in case of breakdown or
    crash!

    Enjoy and good luck.

Get them to repaint it and insist they provide you with another car while
they paint yours. Then thrash the **** out of it.

Welcome to the nightmare of dealer servicing. Do yourself a favour - Do it
all yourself. Then you'll know it'll be done right.

Yes, it's endemic, and the worst thing is, these are the very people who
    DON'T EVEN HAVE WARNING TRIANGLES!
    It's bloody shocking.
