Thread: MBR Trashed

    MBR Trashed

I'm locked out of one of my hd's partitions because the MBR was
inadvertently trashed. Is there a program that will restore it; I have
looked at several programs which would give me access to rewriting it,
but I don't know what to "say." Is there a program that would do it
automatically, or is there a generic thing I can write? Something with
zeroes in it :-) Thanks in advance.

Insert the xp cd, boot to trhe cd and choose Recovery Console. When the
Recover Console appars, type in "fixmbr" (without the quotes)

    Re: MBR Trashed

First be more concerned with why the MBR got trashed. Is it
really defective, or did something else happen such as the
Disk type got changed in BIOS? Fixing an MBR with a defective
BIOS setting would only make things worse. Some BIOS disk
extenders want the BIOS set to unique (nonstandard) settings.
Is that disk using a conventional motherboard BIOS or special
software from a disk manufacturer? Just some questions that
should be answered before wildly moving forward to fix
things. Bad technique is to fix things before learning what
is really wrong. Example: what is the exact error message
that has you assuming an MBR got trashed? MBRs are difficult
    to corrupt.
