Entry Level Receiver Advice

Ahoy there,

Just thought I'd come back and pick your collective brains some more. I had posted previously on the topic of speakers and got some helpful info but now I'm back to ask about receivers.

I'm after a good entry level receiver. I was looking at the Pioneer VSX-815 but after doing some more net surfing and what not I'm not so sure. I'm sorta looking at the Denon AVR-1905, Yamaha RX-V557 and the Onkyo TX-SR503.....all around the same retail price. I've been able to check out the Yamaha but not the Denon or Onkyo yet.

As far as entry level receivers go am I looking in the right direction? I know its ultimately up to but if there is anything that you think I should know or look at in addition to these I'd be grateful.

BTW........as far as Onkyo go I understand their new line has just come out and their old line disappearing ie - the 603 replaces the 602. Am I right about this? If so would it be best to look for a good deal on a SR602 rather than get a SR503?

Cheers.......

Re: Entry Level Receiver Advice

Forgot to add don't go the cheaper Pioneer receivers, I had one, it was
rated 100Wx5, I had it for a day, took it back paid a bit extra and got
the Onkyo which was rated less, in terms of sound quality and output,
the Onkyo kicked the Pioneers ass. I found the Pioneer also when
turning the volume knob had this crackling clicking sound coming
through the speakers, and on top of that more audible hissing.

If you can get a 602, get it. More power, component upscaling. 3
Component Inputs, whereas the 503 have only 2.

Re: Entry Level Receiver Advice

Go the Yamaha or the Onkyo,

I'm running an Onkyo 501 at the moment which is a fantastic amplifier.
The 503 I think is slightly more powerful, however I prefer the look of
the 501's.

Have you considered the Marantz SR4500? Great amp for the price.

Denon Amp

I have been looking into getting the Denon AVR-3805 from USA, and am hoping to be able to get it for about $1000 Aust. This Reciever/Amp retails for about $2400 here and has great reviews. Freight is the only concern currently. One place who sells the unit for $675 USD won't freight OS, but if I can arrange pickup from a freight company, hey can pick it up from the warehouse. Let me know if you want more info.

Re: Entry Level Receiver Advice

Then you will need a big transformer110 volts to 240 volts to run the thing.

Don't forget GST (10%) and Customs Duty (5%) may be payable. Also, freight costs for amps is horrendous.
