Which brand of plasma?

Looking to buy a Plasma "42 in Perth around 3K.
Any Recommended brands?
High definition or standard definition?
Does it make much of a difference.

If you can buy one of those brands for that price, you are doing well.

I think you'll find the LG's the cheapest. I've purchased the LG42px4dv with an inbuilt tuner and it loks great (only SD and picture is often noisy), but cost under the 3k mark.

Have you looked around to see what is available for under 3k in 42"?

You can often get an extended 5 year warranty for about $500 (for LG atleast). This does not cover Dead Pixels (within reason) or Image burn... It only really covers software, firmware, Panel faults...

An inbuilt tuner means that your signal is not converted from Digital to Analogue, then back to digital, and is one less input to use...

Isn't the LG having an inbuilt HD tuner but the panel is SD.
What's the point of having a HD tuner with a SD panel?

No point. But the picture looks good (for the price I paid). I don't think there is a point unless the scaling is better...

I already have that LG which sits in the lounge room, my parents use
it.

It's got a fantastic picture I reckon and the convenience of an
integrated tuner.

Basically best plasma buy at the moment.

If the tuner part has a digital audio out facility, then you should be able
to feed this signal into an external HT processor / amp for DD5.1 decoding
when it is broadcast with some HD movies. DD5.1 is not part of the normal
SD stream.

Ah, Thanks. I have noticed some movies and sport broadcast in surroundsound, such a nice advantage I'd thought about, but not gone into any detail...

The LG has optical output, it also has 2 optical inputs and allows for
optical audio switching.

Alan, what do you mean by feeding the signal into an external HT
processor/ amp for DD5.1 decoding.

Does that mean that an additional equipement is needed?

Save up a little more money then - it will be worth it. Better to spend an
extra few $$$ than waste $2-3K.

Most HD tuners don't decode to the full 6 channels required by DD5.1. Most
downmix to two (L & R) only for audio output. By feeding the DD5.1
bitstream from the digital output of the HD tuner you can (when broadcast)
enjoy full DD surround sound through your HT receiver / processor.

To enjoy full DD5.1 surround sound you will need an external processor or DD
compatible HT receiver, 5 speakers and a subwoofer. As you have probably
already noticed your plasma panel only comes with 2 speakers. Some provide
a facility for pseudo surround sound via two speakers. It isn't true
discrete surround sound - just an illusion of surround sound.

It is indeed good for the price you are paying. I was simply suggesting
that for those people who budget a certain amount towards a plasma should
seriously consider spending a little extra (if they can afford it). I spent
nearly a year researching before I ended up going for the NEC. The Digital
Broadcasting Australia forums are an invaluable tool for gathering info on
the most highly recommended and regarded models. Then check them out for
yourself. I must admit I don't keep as up to date as much as I used to
since I purchased mine, but it's still clear that Pioneer and NEC remain the
industry leaders. Granted, they are a little more expensive, but IMO worth
every cent.

Pioneer is heavily overrated in my opinion, especially when you put one
side by side against the Philips for example, at work i've got a 50"
Pioneer & 50" Philips, the Philips wins hands down, after tweaking and
fiddling. Still awaiting the new Pioneers though.


The NEC's are fantastic units, their SD units are simply beautiful
compared to other brands in the SD range, clearly a huge difference
when you put the SD NEC against the SD LG.

I reckon the best picture quality is offered by the Fujitsu screens.
