46" LCD display - $7000 New!

There is now a Samsung display (460PN) available for aprox $13000 retail. It seems that a contact of mine is able to get these panels for Under $7000. Just wondering if there would be anyone out there interested in one of these panels. The Australian Samsung Website is dodgy and has incorrect information on this panel, check http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/pdf/460Pn_datasheet.pdf for specs.

The panel is only 1366 x 768 native res. It also doesn't have a tuner.
Sharp have a 45" panel thats 1920 x 1080 - true HD res, and it's only $11K
RRP! (Tuner is analog though)

Yes, I am not saying the retail is a good price.

I believe the response time on that display is about 12ms, thats a bit slow for many applications... I saw that one on sale for $7900 (they have the retail price listed as $15499).

Meh. We have the 40" and smaller versions at work, nothing special,
they still don't have the contrast or viewing angle of a plasma or crt.

The retail price of the Sharp unit is $10,999 off the Sharp web site - just
like the link said.
Would you go for a WXGA panel for nearly the same price as a true HD panel?

I have no idea not having actually seen either. I don't think you could say one is better than the other without seeing both- regardless of resolution. What HD sources are there currently which you could see the difference on?

Why would you waste so much on an LCD when the technology still is far
from being perfect. I have yet to see an LCD that can do as a black as
an equivalent plasma, or crt. True you can get true 1080i LCD's and not
plasmas, but what do we have in Australia at the moment (bar a good PC)
that takes advantage of it? Our HDtv system is still in early stages
and leaves a hell of a lot to be desired.

Only benefit I see in LCD is a) you can get them in sizes under 42" b)
all lcd's are generally HD c) LCD's are great for computer use as you
can't burn them. d) you can replace the backlighting

Flip side:

a) LCD's still have far from perfect blacks b) screens are easy to
damage especially with children around c) Some LCD's pump out as much
heat as a plasma d) Many LCD's still suffer from poor viewing angles e)
LCD's are still ridiculously expensive compared to similar plasmas f)
Some LCD's still have a tendency to blur with fast movement. Granted
though all LCD's are getting better every generation that comes out.

Undecided : Power consumption, people say LCD's consume less however
some i've encountered pump out fair amounts of heat (how does this heat
affect the life of the panel itself?) - LCD's have their blacklights
continuously on, whereas Plasma each pixel is always changing its light
output. Has anyone have an solid figures on this? Because I've been
asked this question numerous times by customers, and I find it hard to
give a straight answer.

Anyone want to counter my argument?

You forgot the other compelling reason for LCD:

Plasma is not so good at significant altitude -rollseyes

True, I forgot to add that actually.

It's really applicable to those who live high up, but there are some
Plasmas from Pioneer and Panasonic I think which are actually designed
for high altitude use.
