One of those subjective eye/beholder things - which makes it easy for auction sellers to make (embarrassingly tacky) claims. 'Tis surprising how much some phone numbers are worth to people, though. |

I could probably understand it for businesses to have numbers that may be easy for customers to remember, or for radio stations to have their call in numbers that match the station's frequency, etc. But to pay that sort of dough for something that's most likely to be used as a private number..... > 'Tis surprising how much some phone numbers are worth to people, though. Yeah, like number plates on cars, as well. For years, it was impossible to get a personalised plate for your car here in Victoria. Then Vicroads realised that there was a market for this sort of thing. It's been making shitloads ever since. No doubt if or when they ever allow more than six characters, that'll open a further floodgate of people demanding their personalised plate. I'd go for a personalised plate, except that Vicroads wouldn't allow this one: Can't understand why, either.... |

I grabbed them all the day MobileNet stopped reserving 0418 GSM numbers for people with the 018 AMPS equivalent. I got about five of them at $50 a pop each (they were all triple triple numbers, but all ten huxtuple numbers in the 0418 range had already been taken). That would have been early 1997 from memory. Kept two for myself (one for me and one for Mrs Wachope - so we had cutesy pie matching numbers) and put the others on Flexiplan 20. I ended up getting sick of paying $240 pa for each of those ones and just disconnected them some time in 1998, I think. I imagine there would have been some very annoyed 018-aaa-bbb people out there. |

When my Nokia 100 died I decided to bite the bullet and get a GSM (analog still had some time left to run). I couldn't get the same number as the analog (eg 018 555 555 to 04xx 555 555). I had to accept whatever was the "next number in line". |

Not really, their problem for not upgrading from 018 to 0418! I heard MNET is going to release a new number range shortly |

Then Telstra went to translating numbers, where everyone got an equivalent number, 99.9% of people got a number based on their AMPS no. If you rang the GSM number and it wasnt connected it went to the AMPS. Was something like 0407 015 014, then 017 0408 018 0409 019 Now its all a bit hazy, but something like thta > > |

The 040 ranges were a bit after my time (in fact, I think even 0417 was perhaps after my time). I remember that they used to offer free redirections from AMPS to GSM for 18 months as part of the "Jaw Dropper" deals. I think they openly released the 0418s when they were running low on the 0419s?? I didn't put my 0418 numbers on the staff plan because some of their 018 equivalents belonged to Strathfield executives, and when they bitterly complained to the B&G powers-that-be (which was inevitable), I didn't want it obvious that the numbers had been "stolen" by a Telstra employee. I left shortly after that, anyway. |
