Recommend a phone please

Hi all

Will all the choices out there, and the lack of experience from the 16 yo sales staff who are directed to sell the most profitable phone can anyone give me a recommendation for what mobile to get??

I have a Nokia 8110 at the moment with 1/2 the buttons playing up. Except for that functionality it already has (which is quite simple in todays standards) I would REALLY like a sync up to Microsoft Outlook. I dont particulary care about ring tones, photos, blah blah blah I just want a phone that works with a calender sync.

Any suggestions? I dont want to go into 3G at the moment. Cheaper end of the scale would be the way to go and roughly the same size as the 8110. Any opinions on the Sony Ericcson 508i??

I would recommend the Nokia 6230 or 6230i, I have used the Nokia 6230
for work and know several people with them and they perform very well.
They are very easy to use and will easily sync with Microsoft Outlook
via Nokia PC Suite (free) or other third party software such as Oxygen
Phone Manager II (commercial).

data cable.

My next phone will be from a brand that's happy to throw the data cable in
with the phone package, like Sony Ericsson.

I have a Nokia 6680 and it came with a cable in the box! Although I use
a Bluetooth dongle and Nokia PC Suite automatically syncs every time I
come within range of my computer.

Whoa... $150 *is* ridiculously overpriced. Genuine Nokia DKU-2 cables
retail at less than half that.

Can't you use infrared? The USB adapters for that are much cheaper, and (for
the next few years) will work with any new phone you get, thus futureproof.

Sorry, should have mentioned that this was the DKU-5 to suit the 3100. The
phone itself cost $250, so when I saw the price of the data cable I gave a
metaphorical two-fingers to Nokia and bought a "pirate" cable for $40.
Works perfectly.

Nokia, for their part, couldn't see why I thought $150 was extortionate.

That would have been my preference, but the Nokia I have (the 3100) doesn't
have Infrared. Lesson learned for next time :)

Nokia's PC Suite software is dreadful anyway, and the only other option is
Oxygen's offering, which is way too expensive. Anyone know what the Sony
Ericsson software is like?

Calm yourself, Rod dear. Back when I bought my 3100 (December 2003) that's
what the DKU-5 cost. It's been discounted since, but I had already gone and
bought a pirate cable, and have had no hassles with it (and even with the
current discount price of the DKU-5 it was still less that half the cost)

Bear in mind that the manufacturing cost of the DKU-5 would be a few
dollars at the most.

Well, the 6230/i are both good. As is the S/E k700i.
And the Motorola rokr I have yet to see, but I suspect it will be as good
also.
At a higher price bracket is the I-mate Jam (Telstra flavour) or O2 xda mini
(Optus flavour), identical units, see www.imate.com . Won heaps of awards
overseas. Brilliant little gadget, and the user can do thier own firmware
updates.

The only recommendation I'd give is to steer clear of any Symbian OS based
handsets. They are slow, prone to bugs. I wouldn't want to have to wait ages
after turning one on to make an emergency call.

Thanks for your input, I wouldnt mind getting a S/E, the k700i looks pretty good. Dont guess that I could assume that all S/E's have the same sync functionality could I, and therefore the 508i (which I know to be about $200) would work as well as the k700i (which is worth??)

My phone is symbian based Nokia 9210i and it doesn't take
forever to make a call emergency or otherwise once you turn
it on.....

Ah, let me rephrase it, as "they take ages to turn on". Once they are on, of
course they are as quick to call with:)

What data is shared between PC and phone that's "sync'ed". Does it have
an organiser, etc. in it? And what software does it sync with?

Where? Cheapest that I've seen is about $90. That's from a branded
Telstra Shop and also from Telstra (and Optus reseller).

Hi Martin,
All phone book contacts, SMS/MMS/Email, notes and calendar
entries are synced. With the PC Suite you can also install applications,
games, ring tones and wallpapers. You can set up your caller groups and
many other features.
