Q. Does plasma consume far more power compared tp LCD?
Q. Has LCD overcome the "smear" during fast motion?
Q. Is there a definative answer to which system is best and why?

No. They consume a more, but not 'far more'. Getting closer all the time.

Nope. They are all biased in one way or the other.

I like Plasma's for the main living/viewing room. but LCD's for
bedrooms/small spaces. Basically LCD's are good up to a certain size,
then plasmas take over. They don't directly compete with each other.
Yes, there are some that cross over, but your paying big bucks for a 40"
LCD and the plasmas will still give a better picture. Same as above 50"
projectors are the way to go - again with a cross over.

Take any LCD vs Plasma review with a grain of salt.

I agreed with John. LCD are more suitable for smaller size. They are
typically heavier and collapse on their on size when too big. Plasma is
able to go bigger but has some burn-in problem but hey, $5000 for 6 5
years not too bad. If you want to go bigger, projector is the way to go.

Sony V series LCD's are the best I've seen they are out now in some Sony
stores and up to Nov 9th in other stores,up to 40 inches above that you need
plasma,

I have a 42" HD plasma and it shows a fantasic picture. I would opt for
plasma at this size. I also have a 19" LCD in my bedroom and the
picture does not compare. Like you say, smears when in motion. The
picture on the plasma is much more fluid like. For me there is no
choice.
What people are saying above though is also correct, I also get to
watch a 68" HD plasma on a regular basis, and although the size of it
is comanding, the picture on my smaller unit does seem to be of better
quality.

Why would you waste so much on an LCD when the technology still is far
from being perfect. I have yet to see an LCD that can do as a black as
an equivalent plasma, or crt. True you can get true 1080i LCD's and not
plasmas, but what do we have in Australia at the moment (bar a good PC)
that takes advantage of it? Our HDtv system is still in early stages
and leaves a hell of a lot to be desired.

Only benefit I see in LCD is a) you can get them in sizes under 42" b)
all lcd's are generally HD c) LCD's are great for computer use as you
can't burn them. d) you can replace the backlighting

Flip side:

a) LCD's still have far from perfect blacks, I think the best ones are
800:1 b) screens are easy to
damage especially with children around c) Some LCD's pump out as much
heat as a plasma d) Many LCD's still suffer from poor viewing angles e)
LCD's are still ridiculously expensive compared to similar plasmas f)
Some LCD's still have a tendency to blur with fast movement. Granted
though all LCD's are getting better every generation that comes out.

Undecided : Power consumption, people say LCD's consume less however
some i've encountered pump out fair amounts of heat (how does this heat
affect the life of the panel itself?) - LCD's have their blacklights
continuously on, whereas Plasma each pixel is always changing its light
output. Has anyone have an solid figures on this? Because I've been
asked this question numerous times by customers, and I find it hard to
give a straight answer.

sharp.

I work for Harvey Norman, so on a weekly basis I get to see and
compare. Mosst LCD's are good but not great, but still the plasmas
rule. The new LG 37" & 42" LCD's with integrated HD tuners have ghastly
pictures and poor viewing angles, the SD 42" LG with integrated tuner
has a superior picture in my honest opinion.

When dealing with customers I simply say if you want anything smaller
than 40" you only have LCD as an option, if you want bigger unless you
plan to hook your computer up to it, go a Plasma. If you want the best
value for money and picture quality, a plasma is the way to go.

I personally dont see a future in LCD, especially with OLED & SED on
the horizon. That being said I think plasma with fade out to. I see
plasma as just the transition from CRT to the next step (either OLED or
SED) but as I said at the moment Plasma is the best looking flat panel
tech currently available on the market and until something better comes
out, I'll be putting my money on the plasma horse.

That's the unit that made me decide to buy plasma ;-) After
being told by everyone that this was *THE* LCD to have I was
very disappointed. Why would anyone pay that much for such
a small screen that has issues?

That's where I bought my Pioneer 50" from. I actually had a
great deal - for about 3 weeks then the price fell.

BTW brand new out of the box it had 1 hot blue pixel in the
main viewing area :-( Unit was swapped next day. The man
from HNs was not a happy chappie - 2 unpacks and 2 home
setups for one commission ;-)

We got a one only for $5999 as of yesterday. They are a nice plasma,
however sitting next to the 50" Philips, the Philips has the edge. But
then again the Pioneers out of the box apparently need pro calibration
to make them shine.

The sharp I was saw impressive, hooked up to a Chinese HVD player,
picture was stunning. But at the price of $14k, it just wasn't worth
it. Even the best LCDtv's at the moment can only do 800:1 contrast, the
best plasmas are far ahead of that.

I know how the salesdroid would've felt, I don't mind doing home setups
myself you can make great money on the side doing it :) sometimes I
throw it in as a freebie just to close a sale. Other times people just
like the idea that the person who served them will come out and help
them to (even if they have to pay) Although I hate when people
expect/demand it for free, as that's offensive, it's like people don't
understand petrol costs money and outside of work we do have a life. I
gotta balance work life and uni life, so my time is valuable and
precious and worth every $$$. Sorry i'm ranting here.

Got a look at the new Pioneer PDP-506HD yesterday. Looks like they haven't
got a digital tuner in the box yet. :-( I would have thought Pioneer would
have probably done a dual digital / analogue tuner for the benefit of
country folk and of course those who watch Community Access TV (ch31).
However according to the sales drone it now has HDMI (but I thought the 505
had that too??? - could be wrong but then again I don't own one.)

Asking price was $7600 which isn't much down from the r.r.p. but as the guy
said - "we can negotiate on that price....."

The 505 had/has HDMI.

Except for LG none of the other major plasma makers have integrated
tuners.

The new HD LG's with integrated tuners have so,so pictures.

I still think the SD model with the integrated tuner has a much nicer
picture.

The way I understood it was Pioneer Oz's idea that these
were set up as part of the deal.

So if the deal is "That is the price delivered and set up"
then that is what happens.

The RRP of the sharp is now $10,999 - you shoould be able to bargain
quite a bit on that.

Yer I know, when I first saw one it was $14k.

Cost on them is like $9-10k anyway, there's not very much demand for
them here as far as i've seen.

I myself have never had a single customer even interested in one.
Neither has the store even bothered to order one for display, very few
people are interested in paying $10k for an LCD, when you can have a
much nicer looking plasma for $5-6K granted its not true 1080i, but as
I said I haven't seen an LCD that looks as good as a plasma, yet.

Okay Grease Monkey, why should I change my posting name here? Okay, given
PA wouldn't be seen dead here I rather like being non-anonymous. That way
when I post on other NGs that's likely to attract PA's attention he won't
get confused about who he is going to be abusing.

Just for the record, I've been using various simian nicks on the internet
for years. Having been born in the year of the Monkey I have a divine claim

I finally got to add my other dislike of LCD's.

The screens themselves. They seem for fragile, all it would take it a
little kid with a pencil, or sharp object or even playing with his toys
on the screen (like kids do) can easily damage the screens. I find the
membranes can be easily scratched and by god to they get dirty easily,
fingerprints are a bigger pain in the ass to clean off an LCD methinks.

Some lcds do come with a protective glass panel, but then this adds to
the glare issue.

The fact that some LCD's pump out shitloads of heat too, i've felt some
screens put out similar heat to plasmas, in the long term how good is
heat on lcd's?

No, and there are bigger problems. The picture looks terrible and the blacks
are only dark grey even on the most expensive LCD panels.

No there is no definitive answer but I believe that a DLP RPTV is the best
value for money at the moment. Not quite the blacks of a CRT but the
"film-like" picture quality is fantastic. Far better than any plasma. The
only drawback is expensive lamp replacment every 6000 hours.

What about the noise of a plasma screen? Listen to one in a quiet
environment. You may be surprised.
