Optus 3G on sale next week

Optus 3G on way

OPTUS will unveil its 3G mobile service later this week amid signs its
once mighty mobile phone business has ground to a halt, adding only
59,000 new users in the September quarter.

Coming off its lowest quarter since starting business in 1993, the
company will bring up the rear among Australia's four mobile network
players in launching 3G. Optus experienced roll-out problems with its
network, part of which it shares with rival Vodafone, delaying its
launch.

Its deployment partner Nokia was forced to hand work over to rival
company TCI in order to finish phase one of the network before
Christmas, sources said.

Hutchison started its 3G service on its "3" network two years ago,
Telstra in September and Vodafone last month. The Australian has
learned that Optus will make an announcement on the service as early as
this week and begin commercial sales next week.

But it will only offer services in Sydney and Melbourne initially.

The mobiles result is the worst quarterly performance by Optus in five
years.

It is almost half the 105,000 the company added in the June quarter -
its previous low mark.
