Disc stuck in Player

i went to watch a dvd today but when i put it in my player it came up with no disc inserted i took the dvd out and closed the tray and a dvd started playing - it turns out that the last dvd i played is stuck in the back of the player and wont come out when the tray is ejected

i dont think its under warranty anymore so i want to try and avoid paying to get it fixed

any help would be greatly appreciated

Surely you can just pull the player apart?

What is the brand, and is it a Hifi or computer player.

Establishing whether the warranty has expired (not just "I dont think") would be a really good idea before you start.

its a Philips DVP532K (normal dvd player)

when i said i dont think its still under warranty i pretty much meant that it deffinetely isnt - i havnt checked yet but i bought it last year in August and it only had a 12 month warranty

apart from pulling it apart you pretty much will have to take it somewhere to get it fixed,i had the same problem with my dvd player,when it does that it's usually the loading mechanism that fails meaning that it will play a dvd but loads it up past the spot where it has to sit,and when you eject it ,it's always sitting halfway in the tray,that's what was explained to me,you can try fixing it yourself but there's no guarantee it wont happen again

do you know around how much it costs to get it fixed?

mine cost me $150.00 i only got it fixed because it was worth nearly $500.00 new and just out of warranty,it really depends on the brand you have and if it's worth the money to fix,you can buy dvd players from around $48.00 these days,so it really depends on if you want to spend the money fixing or replacing it,hope that helps you out

i can get a dvd player with divx support for that price

You Really should try pulling it apart yourself - there isn't much to loose.

Hifi Repair shops will charge anything from $80-130/hr for labour fees.

You are really better of just buying a new player if you stuff it up - at least you will get a new warranty.

Of course, the disk will have some value too I presume?

not really its only worth about $7 (the nugget ex rental)
ill probably get my brother to have a look as he is better at this kind of thing then me

Get him to have a look.
Sometimes the rental shops have had stickers around the holes in the middle.
If the sticky stuff wasn't removed properly, probably the disc has now stuck to the hub.

thats what it will be - i was trying to get the sticky stuff off the disc but couldnt, so it must be stuck to the hub

Ex-rental? There's a reason why they state 'don not remove this sticker'
You'll also have to clean to the top part of the hub to avoid normal discs from sticking too.

I've got 2 players that like to keep the disc on occasion. I've always been able to shake them out. Just shake and keep trying the eject button even try it upside down. The units are fairly durable.

I have found ejecting the disc immediately after use seems to reduce the occurance.

my cd rom drive does the same thing sometimes, i assume youve tried banging the top of it with your hand?

thas about all i can suggest, though a good idea (as mentioned above) just grab a screwdriver, slowly open it up, and see if you can get the disc out...

thanks for the help everyone - i ended up getting it out by asking my brothers mate (who has an apprentiship in something that involves this kind of thing) to help me and he got it out for me with ease

just remember if you are going to play that dvd again clean up the glue from the centre otherwise it will stick again

i would suggest using metho to clean the glue off,anything harsher than that may damage the disc centre,i know thats what happened to my disc,use a cotton ball or a cotton bud and rub in one section at a time till the stickiness has gone then move to the next part and so on till it's clean

wow thats a tough break,how often does that occur,if it keeps doing that you're better off getting a new dvd player
