region questions

hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before. I want to buy a dvd from overseas but not sure whether it will play on my dvd player. They say it has "multi"region but is this the same as "All" regions?
I have a panasonic rv40 which says in the manual region4 and "ALL"but will not play specific regions eg region1. It also hints that it will play both pal and ntsc but im not sure??Any assistance greatly appreciated.

A lot of Panasonic players are not multi zone, many are not easily hackable either and require a disc to set the player to region free, these are generally only available to their service centres.

I think that a DVD disc can be a specific region (e.g. 4), but you can also get discs that are "All" region.
I'm thinking that from what you have said, your player can play discs marked as "Region 4" or "Region All", but not regions 1,2 etc.

I think recent model Panasonics are region free out of the box but older models are not and in fact often need a hardware fix.

Check at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php or ring a panasonic service centre.

If you cannot make your player multiregioned then I would recommend buying another that is. The savings you will make with imports will more than pay for the extra player (not that they are that expensive thesedays anyway).
