problems tuning in phillips dvd recorder

Hi,happy new year all,I just bought a phillips dvd recorder,from the main tv set we run a splitter through to another room,this is where my dad uses his tv,it was fine just with the vhs,the vcr in his room tuned into the vcr channel from the main room via the splitter cable however I have not been able to tune in the dvd recorder,can anyone help,I need my dad to be able to veiw the dvd channel in his room,would greatly apreciate any help,if the vcr channel is 37 what is dvd?Thanks
