Notes for No colour resulting from using component connection

I have encountered a weird problem took me 2 days and trying out more than three DVD players. I post the details here in case someone is facing a similar problem.

Problem: Producing black and white with colour signals
Set Up: DVD player connects to Receiver using component. Receiver connects to projector using component. The reason is the receiver needs to switch between two component sources (another one is HD STB). The component cables I use are above average coaxial cables.

This set up has been working for quite a while. During these times, I have used two different DVD players. One is Toshiba, another one is Chinese model Viewmaster. Together with the STB, there are three component sources.

Problem started when I needed a progressive scan DVD player. I tried a cheap GigaTech, all I got was very dim black and white pictures. Thinking I must had a faulty unit, I tried another unit with the same result. I then tried a Zensonic 340, thinking a different model had to work and I was wrong. The Zensonic 340 produced the same problem. I then discovered if I connected the projector directly to the DVD players, the problem would go away.

My final fix is buying a Pioneer DV-686 DVD player as a late Christmas present.

Possible reason: Some cheap DVD players' component output signal strength may be too low or could not sustain the signal strength under other than perfect impedance matching condition.
