Foxtel set to expand

FOXTEL was last week given the green light to offer more than 150 digital
channels in a landmark decision for Australian broadcasting but mystery
remains over what exactly viewers will see.

Services such as enhanced viewer interactivity and ads, personal video
recorders and video-on-demand have previously been mooted.
What is shown on the extra channels may also hinge on the company's ability
to increase live sport coverage, currently protected under anti-siphoning
legislation, and to replay local free-to-air TV programming.

Opening the channels to broadband Internet companies had previously been
ruled out by Foxtel and regional pay-TV group Austar.

Foxtel now has 48 channels.

Research earlier this year revealed more than 97 per cent of people surveyed
were interested in watching more interactive television.

Steve Allen, managing director of media buying agency Fusion Strategy, is
wary of supporting the digital push.

"I don't think digitisation of (Foxtel) will do anything for pay TV," Mr
Allen said.

'Because . . . consumers are disinterested in technology unless there's
great programming to go with it.".........

On cable TV they have a weather channel - 24 hours of weather. We had
something like that where I grew up. We called it a window.

How many of them want to fly to the moon, data a famous TV personality or
win the lottery - you guessed it 98%.

What about OPTUS?

Anyone know if OPTUS will also be getting these new channels? Will new set top boxes be rolled out? If there are going to be 150 channels, the current STBs would only seem to have enough space for 99 channels. Also, will these new digital channels be 16:9 enhanced?

Sorry for all the questions but OPTUS have been awfully quiet about all this.

Re: Foxtel set to expand

I dont think you;d be paying for anything extra!
Its highly unlikely people with the basic package are going to get anything
more than they get now apart from extra shopping channels or something.

Cheers

Steve

Re: Foxtel set to expand

Basic package could do with some more news/finance/shopping channels
They only take up half of the package at the moment
