The neuston Mpeg- 4 Player DVX-1201

Ive seen a lot of talk about the XMS 888 MPEG-4 player from Strathfield Car Audio store. Read all of it and there are some good things about it with vast improvements noticed. I saw this MPEG-4 player, made by neuston Corporation which was one of the pioneer manufacturers of such products but hadnt seen it in Australia until recently even though they were out in the beginning of 2003.

As we may already know, there are a lot less bugs involved in the DVX-1201 than many players out there, most probably because it was out on the market so much earlier than the rest so neuston have had time to clear it up from customer feedback.

Went to the neuston website. They've got this new product, not sure if its in OZ though. Its a wireless media centre, where the video data is communicated wirelessly from your PC hard drive, to neustons media centre, decoded on neustons product and then on your television. Saves you keeping a lot of CD-R's and burning in the first place.

Pretty cool I thought. Its called the VIRTUOSO MC-500.

I wonder where they get these names from!

Their website is www.neuston.com

I'm not sure that it is a fully sorted unit, their own forum would suggest otherwise

It is good to see though that they are addressing firmware issues, at least they are working on it.

Jok11n : I agree with you there. That is why it is after all firmware upgradable however the problems that the newer players are facing today was a thing of the past for neuston. I used to have a DVX-1201 but replaced it with an MC-500. neustons problems today are problems that im sure other manufacturers may face in the future.

I guess they all have problems! Just buy the one with the least amount of them. I found that neuston addressed problems, even on a personal level through the forums!

Hi Jack,

Where did you buy your neuston products from and how much did you pay for each one?

I am particularly interested in the MC500, how is that working for you? Does it play divx and xvid with more consistency than the 1201?

Cheers,

Nick.

I got the MC-500 from neuston Australia in Melbourne. It was originally $499 but I think its gone down substantially since then. It works very well and actually supports almost everything. It also is firmware upgradable so their is no issue as new codecs show their faces to our world! So the answer is yes, it is a lot more consistent than the DVX-1201. The wireless convenience is also darn cool! When I first got it, I thought it was just a cool toy but with application, it really is a media centre. I control everything in my living room this way now. Think its $399 now but not entirely sure. You can e-mail neuston Australia at laurie@neuston.com

For your information. from www.neuston.com

As a debut product of the Virtuoso series, the MC-500 sets the new platform for media files playback from multiple computers through wireless or wired network. The MC-500 allows you to enjoy internet movies and digital content on television so you never have to watch them on a computer monitor again.

Comprehensive Video, Audio and Picture formats

Supporting multiple formats and digital media, the Virtuoso MC-500 is everything you need to enjoy networked home entertainment in your home or office. The MC-500 is capable of MPEG-4 playback.
