Well, here is the new forum / section for DivX related hardware, software etc.
Hopefully in here will go all stuff like firmware related issues on various players as they become available, what codec problems on the different players etc.

A good move I think, these types of players will be a lot more common with new models hitting the stores this month at many retailers

There are a few other threads that might be better off in this section now also, i'm sure a mod will look after that if they think it's appropriate.

I'd suggest that perhaps each new thread is kept to specific topics, a lot of what has been discussed in the xms888 thread could perhaps justify it's own thread, maybe start a new thread related to encoding issues, hints and tips for the best results etc which will relate to other players also. Not to take anything away from the other thread at all, it's one of the longest threads I've seen in a forum that actually stayed on topic the whole time. And perhaps keeping threads dedicated to each player or model as they enter the market will help make a valuable resource for anyone entering this section of the market for the first time.

Thoughts anyone?

I think it would be good to look in this section, and see threads like...
XMS-888 - Audio Problem
Lite-On LVD-2002 - tips
XMS-888 widescreen issues
XYZ - 1234 region free hack?
Showing the make / model, followed by the question / issue / tip / whatever.
That would make it easier for everyone to follow.

I will post details as soon as I have specific info, I have seen pre production samples but they didn't have model numbers allocated yet. As soon as I have more detail I'll pass it on.

Can I make a suggestion and rather than call this forum "DivX & Stuff" call it "MPEG4 stuff" ?

To make it clear it emcompasses all MPEG4 codecs like Xvid as well as DivX.

Just a thought

When I initially asked about a DivX section, I thought of it more in the 'hardware' sense.
That is, I believe that most standalone players are referred to as 'DivX' players, (even though they play other formats like Xvid etc.).
Probably due to the commercialization of DivX, and the push by the producers to get manufacturers of players to have them 'DivX certified'.
Perhaps MPEG4 & Stuff would have been more accurate, but with a lot of 'DivX certified' players coming, I think the average person will just associate MPEG4 with DivX. (although I prefer Xvid)

As new players hit the market that have Divx certified chipsets you will see Divx mentioned in the advertising, I think that it will become the adopted name for all of the mp4 formats

Personally, I dislike DivX networks and the DivX codec. There is a general misconception that commercial software is better than open source software (OSS). However, multimedia compression is one area in which OSS excels. Witness the success of XviD and lame/ogg vorbis. IMHO the old XviD development branch (dev-api-3) was more stable and produced higher quality encodes than any build of DivX that currently exists.

However, I do agree that DivX is commonly associated and used interchangibly in reference to mpeg-4. It's a shame that the mpeg-4 container is not as solid as it should be, because I think AVI is a very bad choice for a hardware player. It is archaic and allows virtually any type of compressed audio/video to be utilised. Hence all the problems with "DivX" players which are really "AVI" players that only support mpeg-4 video streams and a small portion of popular compressed audio streams.

A good point worth remembering, I think it will be a big ask for any player to be able to play any file without issue. I think if they can cover the majority of types though they're doing well

I agree. I was just saying that its a shame that most mpeg-4 players use AVI instead of an MP4 container. But I guess its mostly due to the sloppy mpeg-4 container spec.

The $100-$200 question is that, Will it be worth waiting for the new brands/models to come out compared to the XMS? In a way it would be nice to own the XMS-888 as it's like a bit of history. The first DIVX player in Australia under $200.00 . In 2 years we may be saying, I paid so much for that two years ago
