XMS-888: Part of history

A thread for those who own the XMS-888, do you intend to keep this DVD player locked away or in the garage after it's lived it's short or long life.

Being the first divx player under A$200.00, is it significant enough for you to hold onto and show in 10 years how much you paid for this wide rectangular box that was the first known dvd player to play 99% of all media file types in it's time.

I don't know that it will go down in history (your enthusiasm is noted though) like everything else that's electronic, the next model will be better, faster, cheaper, whatever and they will get that cheap that no one will ever think about getting something fixed. We are certainaly becoming a disposable society

I've seen DVD players down at $69. Even this is incredible for me.
Being used to things in the PC industry going down in price, it still surprises me that something with a power supply, a case, a dvd player, main board, a remote control, labour to build, ship, etc., etc., and still they can sell something that cheap.
However, I'll bet cheap DivX players are selling for a little over $100 by christmas.

Electronic antique.... heh heh, few electronic components have sentimental value to 90% of the population, if it is broken and a replacement is cheap, then it is off to land fill.

As for DVD players, the Digitor in my review was $59 over Dec/Jan... CHEAP!

i'm not sure about going down in history

but it is a significant step in the right direction

I think by next xmas there will be around 10-20 divx players on the market and quality/compatibility will be much better rather than the price going down as such

to me under $200 is plenty cheap enough, i prefer quality increases rather than price reductions

This is truly bizarre pricing. Around Oz$16 of every set is supposed to be paid to the MPEG contributors as a license fee. If you start with $59, take out GST, retail profit, miscellaneous charges, and allow a few bucks for shipping, then the manufacturer could not be making more than $20 on the deal.... tops.

I'd be the last person to knock back a good deal, but.. hard to know how the market can sustain this sort of pricing AND any sort of quality.

OTOH, the XMS-888 seemed pretty reasonable and good value for $188.

Well they were around the $129 mark originally, so maybe DSE bought to many and just wanted to clear the last few crates... better to clear at no profit than to have stock sitting around taking up valuable floor space.
