XMS-888 Multisession DVD's

Has anyone had any luck with multi-session DVD's (+R) on the XMS-888.
Nero pops up and warns that some DVD-ROM drives may not be able to read Session 2 and higher (also machines older than Windows XP).
The DVD-ROM drive in my PC can read session 2, but the XMS-888 can't.
Does anyone know if it would be possible for the firmware to work around this (my guess is yes), or is there some other limitation?
I want to be able to put avi's on to keep, but would like to be able to add more avi's when the oppurtunity arises.

OK, tried it.
Multi-session discs...
With both DVD-R and DVD+R you cannot see session 2 or higher.
CD-R and CD-RW work fine.
DVD-RW and DVD+RW should not be a problem I believe.

I tried DVD-RW with InCD. It is not exactly multisession but
very similar. No problems.

I will be trying this in another player next week to compare and see if this is the norm or not. Could be worth trying multisession recordings of mp3's in a regular dvd and see if multiple sessions can be seen

Seems like it's not just the 888, the Yamada DVX-6100 (similar ESS chipset (without the integrated DVD control)) has the same problem.

Either, it's in the 'base firmware' provided by ESS, or it's common in all players.
I'll see if I can find anything on players with different chipsets.

It seems a bit of a waste, to have to wait until you have 4.7GB of data before you burn a disc...
I think this sort of player should support multi-session on DVD+-R discs, due to the nature of them. (i.e. wanting to add 'the next episode' on your MPEG-4 encoded home video)

I've confirmed that multisession on DVD-RW works fine, I can't see any reason why +RW wouldn't work as well.

I guess you could archive the files on the rw until you have enough to fill a disc and then copy all your files over in one hit. I tend to only put them on rw if I want to check them in the player, I just leave what I want on hard drive until i'm ready. Hard drive space (fortunately) is so cheap these days that I have several hundred gig of free space at any given time to play with.

That's true, but I was also thinking that you could have say a DVD+or-R disc, with a particular type of show on it, and when a similar thing comes up, you could add it to a disc that had that same type of show on it.
Now, you could have quite a few of these on the go at the same time, meaning that you could have a number of DVD+or-RW's being taken up, just waiting until they are full (possibly for months, possibly they never get filled up), so that you can then transfer them over to the write once variety.
If multi-session is possible on +or-R, then it would be better.
(I'm still looking to find if there are issues with this on players based on other chips, but I got side-tracked by some interesting articles elsewhere on the internet)

I know the stand alone recorders can use R media like this, but they also don't make a true DVD when they do it either, until they are finalised you can't view them in anything but the recorder. When finalising the disc they add some info which adds the compatability.

If you are looking into it, try checking out bitsetting for dvd burners, may not be anything to do with the problem at hand but I do remember reading up on some guys hacking their own DVD firmware to use bitsetting to alter the table of contents to get around some similar sort of issue. (warning, I may be off track here, it's late and I need sleep)

My burner's firmware doesn't support bitsetting as yet, although the older molder LiteOn's do, so I presume that they will probably update the firmware to support it at some stage.
I've had a look around for other chip manufacturers, re problems with multi-session, so far I haven't found anything, so either...
a) they support multisession, so it doesn't come up as an issue, or
b) they don't support multisession, and no-one has discovered it as a problem yet (that seems hard to believe), or
c) I'm not looking in the right places (quite possible)
It will be interesting when you (jok11n) try multisession with DVD+or-R on the new review machine, to find out how it goes...

I recently tried burning a multisession DVD-R and playing it in my XMS989 with no luck. It shows the first session, but none after that. Did anyone find out the actual reason? Is it something that could be incorporated in a firmware update, or is it just a simple hardware incompatibility/limitation?

I'm not sure why this is.
It seems that both the ESS based and MTK based players are like this.
I wish they weren't though...
(multi-session DVD RW seems ok though)

I was gonna ask this exact question in regards to the 989

Anyone have any luck with mulitsession disc' either in DVD+RW or -RW formats? Any issues with media brands?
