Angry XMS-888: Progressive scan & 4:3 DVD's

Is it possible to 'pillarbox' DVDs that are 4:3 when outputting in Progressive mode on the XMS-888?

Most displays which are progressive compatible always treat 576p/480p as always 16:9 and don't allow you to resize to 4:3. Therefore, every 4:3 DVD I watch in progressive mode is stretched to fit the 16:9 screen.

Changing the output to interlaced component on the XMS-888 isn't really an option as the connection on the TV only allows 576p/480p/720p/1080i. Any ideas?

I have this problem as well, with a 'standard' widescreen tv.
However, my old DVD player was exactly the same, and I think they all are like that.
