Trio DX-628 Firmware
Hi J,
Any ETA on DX628 firmware? Even if it's just to remove the default counter in mpeg4 stuff. (What are the chances of removing the bright OFF in standby?) Thanks. |

DX-628 Firmware
The current firmware that had been posted on the triocorp site indicates that it would be responsive to user requests, dated 14/05/2004. The binary file contained within is dated 26/02/2004. It doesn't seem like there has been much movement on firmware since end of February this year to address any playback issues.
The firmware is only cosmetic "quick fixes", possibly the version of Factory firmware that should of originally been placed on the units and was not. Let's hope there is some more development in the near future. Unlike the XMS-888 pro-active involvement with their customers. I've now had an opportunity test the DX-628, XMS-888, XMS-989 and the DVX-558 (region locked). I agree that all these units have some bugs, all of which should be easily rectified. The XMS-888 stands out as the player with the more "mature" product and can only get better. The DX-628 and XMS-989 are on par. If you like gadgets the DX-628 has bells and whistles for audio and video playback, virtual remote and GUI with better playback on DVD. If you like a basic DiVx player bit more stylish than the XMS-888, reasonable DVD playback (can get blocky) and good DivX support go the XMS-989. Look forward to what develops in the DivX market in the near future. My visit to CeBit earlier this year identified a number of new players trying to get into Australia (other than the current ones). |

speaking of divx players entering the aussie market, just received an email from kiss-technologies today.
They have found a distributor for their products here in Australia. details below: Dear Customer, You have in the past shown interest for one of our products, and we promised that we would come back when we were ready to launch in Australia. Because of the importance of the Australian market we have taken a little longer than expected to find the perfect partner. However now we are ready! QualiFi Pty Ltd is from today exclusive KiSS distributor/partner in Australia and New Zealand. I have given Qualify the list with your name. However as they are not allowed to take contact with you, without you asking them first, you need to contact them if you are still interested to hear more about KiSS and our excellent and unique technology. You can contact Qualify by mail: mh@qualifi.com.au or phone: 395431522. Again I thank you for your interest in KiSS Technology A/S and hope that you will use a little time to find out about the amazing world of KiSS. I was curious as to what was taking up all that space. I found some photos of the DP-450/DP500 which shows it all....

i guess kiss pricing would be for the higher end market not for the $150-200 budget divx players...

It seems that the later Kiss products are referred to as slimline, but as you can see, there still is a circuit board under the DVD drive.

I had a look at the bin file supplied using mttinfo, further looked at the hex informaton at certain addresses. Interesting to note with respect the XMS-989 the version of the firmware is,
Version 05.00.02.03 Sub Ver 00.00.00.01 8032 05.00.02.03 and the DX-628 firmware as supplied on the TRIO website is, Version = 05.00.01.09 Sub-Ver = 00.00.00.01 8032 = 05.00.01.09 What gives? Speaking to TRIO, they use the Mediatek issued firmware versions. In there words "the firmware is released by Mediatek", then the DVD player manufacturer makes some cosmetic changes/backgrounds and so on for the TRIO. And I mean this is a simple hack to replace backgrounds and images.. If it is issued by Mediatek I would have assumed the core versioning to be consistant to the currently available or most recent. From this information it does not. |

Expect to see common elements, the chipsets are from the same manufacturer after all. However there are major differences in the firmwares that control the differing hardware in the two units. In other words they are not interchangable, don't be tempted to try using firmware from a different player on your machine. Hacking the firmware also has obvious risks.

This may be of no interest, and people may know this already but I was wondering who the manufacturer of the Trio was. Have a look at,
http://www.globalsources.com/azone.co ie. A-Zone International Co Ltd They have a GK3900, looks very much like the characteristic DX-628 profile, not a common shape. They don't have a real website with support. The specs look exact. I received direct confirmation that the unit is indeed a rebadged GK3900. The new version of the firmware is currently being worked on. Expect to have something soon as it is not ready yet.Last edited by PsAntNed; 23-06-2004 at 02:11 PM.. |
