Wink XMS-888 -- playing .AVI 24000Hz -- this is really wierd

Hi,

I originally purchased an XMS-888 about 4 months ago and quickly flashed to f/w versions 1.1 and 1.2 to overcome some earlier bugs, like freezing when playing some AVI's etc.

I bought another XMS-888 yesterday (3/3/04) after looking at the Trio DX-328.

I was just about to flash to f/w 1.2 and thought I'd view the current f/w version, it's blank.

I then thought I'd try some of the Divx/Xvid with audio 24000Hz that refused to have any sound when played on the older 888, and guess what, everyone of them played audio.

What firmware version is in the new XMS-888, I need to flash the older 888 so I don't have to encode AVI's to MPEG???

Any ideas please where I can get this firmware???

When you say 'it was blank' do you mean it said 'Version : ver', or 'Version : '?

Hi,

Sorry, I meant it says:

Version -> Ver

rather than

Version -> Ver: DF002A

Hope this is a bit clearer now.

Firmware prior to version 1.2, did not correctly identify the version number.
Therefore, It is either 1.1, or 1.0 (i.e. as shipped from the factory).
I believe that none of the in-store units have been upgraded from 1.0, as there is not a lot of point, until the firmware is doing everything correctly (within reason).
Jok11n would be the best to answer your questions on this, official firmware releases are released at ftp://ftp.jokiin.com, for a rundown on features / bugs, other info etc, go to www.xms888.tk .

Angry What gives, wierder than wierd???

Hi,

This gets even wierder.

I exchanged my older XMS-888 for a brand new one, must be from the same shipment, purchased 1 day apart. This is a new one, unflashed.

No. 1. unit purchased 4 March 2004 from Strathfield's
- Plays these AVI's in question, WITH AUDIO
- Plays a backup of Lion King DVD, NO AUDIO

No. 2. unit exchanged 5 March 2004 from Strathfield's
- Plays these AVI's in question, NO AUDIO
- Plays a backup of Lion King DVD, WITH AUDIO

I honestly swear, I haven't been drinking, what's going on.

Ok, you win, that is weird....
Now, do you have 2 XMS-888's, or did you buy one on the 4th, return it, and buy another one on the 5th?
If just one, I presume that you now have just unit 2.
How is your Audio setup? (stereo, digital (optical/coax), 5.1 out)
What settings do you have in the Xms's audio setup?
Maybe someone might see something weird with the setup...

I have 2 XMS-888, one purchased on 4/3/04 and the other exchanged on 5/3/04 for the older XMS-888 I had incase it was faulty.

1. Just using the RCA audio out. Can either connect to the ML/MR or FL/FR sockets. Video is by way of a S-Video cable.

2. Settings in BOTH of the XMS-888 units are the same, I just checked:
SPEAKER - DOWNMIX - STEREO
SPDIF OUTPUT - OFF
OP MODE - LINE OUT
DUAL MONO - STEREO
COMPRESSION - FULL
PRO LOGIC - OFF
LP CM OUTPUT - PCM 96K

3. Settings look the same for each

It's got me baffled and

That sounds exactly the same as mine...?
One could be version 1.0, and the other 1.1, you wouldn't be able to tell, as like I said, prior to 1.2, it just reported 'ver'.
Try PMing jok11n to see if he can send you firmware 1.0. Then you could try 1.2 on both, see if the problems persist (i.e. being different on each machine), but you could always then go back to 1.0 if you wanted to...

Hi,

I took the one I purchased on 5/3/04 that didn't have audio when playing some of the AVI's and replaced it for a new one. This was after I had flashed with f/w 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2. (left it with 1.0)

The replacement plays AUDIO with all of these AVI's, mewooOOOOHHHHAHAHA!

This certainly means to me that there has been a revision to the hardware rather than firmware.

Serial No.s for these 2 XMS-888 that work great are:

XMS04010400

XMS04010079

Any ideas??????????

At least I'm very happy now and certainly no flashing of firmware incase I loose this feature.

As far as I am aware, only one batch has come into Australia, I would be amazed if they had a different hardware versions in the small lot that came.
However, I certainly don't have any suggestions, some weird things can happen...
I have a DVD disc with 5 movies on it, 4 I encoded (the same way), 1 appeared on my PC :-).
Anyway, they all work fine, except 1 of the ones I encoded, I can't fast forward, rewind, use 'goto' etc.
That's 1 out of 5 obviously all on the same media (1 dvd disc), 1 out of 4 encoded the same way, that works fine except for not being able to do anything with it except play, pause and stop...?...
Anyway, what version firmware are you using on them then?
(If it's the original 1.0, then you won't be able to turn off the timer on the screen when playing .avi files (unless you use the workaround))

Hi,

1.
Must be v1.0 or 1.1, haven't flashed these 2 XMS-888 that work, not game to incase I stuff it up.

2.
I can turn off the OSD when playing AVI's by pressing remote OSD 3 times I think.

Is it worth taking some pictures of the insides, what do I look for, chip #'s etc.

Hi,

I finished up taking a picture of my XMS-888 that's playing AUDIO with all of the AVI files.

Can you make out any difference???

I friends wants to buy one as well, but want to make sure his will do the same as mine.

Compare that to:

Both are have a board revision of ED63-Ver1.0 with the date code of 20th August 2003.
So I don't see any difference in board revisions. (not even hand written on, which it might be if there were hand done mods)).
The Vibratto II chip is the same, except for what is probably a serial number.
Other than that, the only obvious difference I can see between yours and mine, Is the "DIVX63-JL" sticker, whereas mine has a "ED63A 031129" sticker (possibly 29th Nov 2003).
What that might signify though, is anybodies guess...
Definitley strange.

Hi,

Do you want me to cut some samples of the AVI's that didn't play AUDIO on the previous XMS-888's I had so you can test for yourself.

I have an FTP if you want.

Hi,

Just to make sure, I burnt the sample you sent me and the 2 you got from me and they ALL played with AUDIO.

There has to be a reason for this, now just what is it.

Are you able to list some bugs with 1.0 and 1.1 so I can test my 2 units? It definitely isn't f/w 1.2 as the firmware bios says Version - Ver:.

Is it possible for someone to contact the manufactures to see if they have an explanation, has there been more than one shipment to OZ, have they revised some of the mainboard chips.

Go here www.xms888.tk to see a list of the bugs in earlier firmwares, there has only been one shipment so far, 500 units were airfrieghted and 1300 followed by sea, but there were all from the same batch. Your serial numbers are from the same batch.

They don't play on my player with 1.0 either.
However, it is possible that there is a firmware (we shall call it 0.9 for want of an earlier number) that is earlier than 1.0 (0.9 being the version in the shipped players).
The 1.0 I was thinking of as having been shipped, is actually the first change that came from the factory.
If there is a 0.9, it will only be on a player that has never been upgraded.
I will leave it for jok11n to try on an unaltered player - (he has your samples now).
