xms-888 Firmware 1.2 BUG

After upgrading to V1.2 when I zoom a DVD to X1.5 I get stutter on the picture go any higher and the stutter goes away ...so I either watch the DVD at normal wide screen with big black bars ...or 2x zoom and miss half the movie.... cannot watch at 1.5X zoom ....very very annoying....these are original DVD's ...tried to flash back to V1.1 Firmware only to get BLACK & WHITE Display ...even with a DVD in ...all was black & white ....but it did fix my 1.5x zoom....that was nice and smooth again.....???????

Double check your video out settings, pal ntsc or auto, if you have it set wrong this can cause jerkiness also, the fact that you were getting black and white pictures suggests that this setting may be incorrect. It would probably be a good idea to check all your menu settings after a flash upgrade also.

Hi.

Just wanted to add some clarification to what jok11n stated above...

US movies are in "NTSC" mode, while Australian/most of rest of world are in "PAL" mode. These have different refresh rates and different number of scan lines (up/down resolution).

Playing an NTSC movie on a TV that can not handle NTSC (though most current ones sold in Australia handle both), will appear as black and white and sometimes roll.

This is what *may* be happening in your case (may be other explanations):

- Your DVD player with v1.1 of firmware was using "auto" settings for TV. This means it was sending out an NTSC signal to your TV. Your TV does not play NTSC (or you may need to set the TV to auto mode - check your manual) and so it came out black and white. The jerkiness at 1.5x was not there because the player did not have to worry about changing display rate/vertical resize as well as the zooming.

- I'm guessing v1.2 of firmware is using "PAL" settings for TV. It means that your NTSC movie is playing in colour on your PAL TV (the player is doing the translation). When you zoom to 1.5x, it has to do more processing (on top of NTSC to PAL frame/vertical resize translation) and it is not coping too well (stutters).

My guess is that it is less work to zoom to 2x, and jerkiness is not issue there.

The thing to try is check your TV manual and see if it can play NTSC, or if there is some setting to let it auto-detect this (sometimes called "colour mode"). Once you have figured this out, change the DVD player's settings (while running firmware 1.2) to TV type "auto". Then NTSC movies will come out NTSC, and PAL will come out PAL... no added burden on player.

To test this theory out, try playing a PAL movie in 1.5x zoom and see if that stutters as well. (It shouldn't if my guess is correct)

Good luck. Cheers,

Laz.
