Trio DX-628 -> VGA monitor

Noticed that the TRIO DX-628 has a VGA out. (As a matter of fact some of the newer DVD players or even Digital set top box seem to have it) What is the output quality like compare to normal TV out? Tempted to get one and plug me old 17" CRT that I'm not using to it instead of buying another TV.

Theoretically, it should be a lot crisper than your TV (depending on how good a screen etc the VGA monitor is of course).
You should be able to get progressive output from it as well, I would imagine, but the proof is in the testing.
Why don't you give them a call, and see if they wouldn't mind if you brought your CRT in to try on it, they should be fairly accomodating, after all, they want to sell you one.

I have only tried it through an LCD but I would think that a CRT would be better, although I think it's really aimed at plasma, projectors etc. Interestingly the VGA out is also macro free

Interesting. So this unit comes with Macrovision enabled? Is there a way to disable it like through a secret keycode/menu? Just out of curiousity really, as I don't think I have ever record stuff from a DVD to a tape much at all these days. I tend to rip it to a DVD-R if I'm desperate for another copy and the tools already automatically remove them for me on the copy.

Cheers

What is the vga resolution? Can you choose screen resolution and refresh rate?
