I fried my xms888...

I got my xms888 last Saturday. Watched a couple of DIVX, MP3 and JPEG files. Everything seemed OK.

I upgraded to firmware 1.2 -- no problems

Then, while watching some commercial DVDs with 16:9 aspect ratio, with 1.5x zoom, I've noticed "jerky" playback. It was smooth on 1x, 2x zoom but on 1.5 it was very annoying.

I did not remember if it was the case before I upgraded firmware, so I decided to go back to 1.1. Burned disk, inserted, player went through normal routine: FLASH, ERASE, WRITING. Then in WRITING phase it started emmiting strange, high pitched whirling noise. Then it went on STANDBY... and never woke up again. Now when I press POWER button it only "whirls", the disk is still inside...

This is my story.

After you turn it back on, try pressing the Standby button on the remote.
After upgrading to 1.2, (I know yours is on 1.1), I noticed that sometimes after powering on with the on/off switch, it goes straight into standby, and the only way to wake it up is with the remote's standby button.
Hope this works for you....

Yeah... I took it back, got another one. This one is not perfect either. Sometimes I have to eject/insert disk a copule of times to get it read.

Cheers
Peter

That is very strange, a few people have posted disc reading errors.
I've never had one except when I've burnt 24x or faster.
Jok11n has posted previously that the read error problems on the xms-888 have been fairly low, perhaps he could comment on what the current status is on this. (perhaps you were just very unlucky and got 2 bad ones in a row)

All of the stock that has been sold so far of the 888 were from the same delivery, it does seem as though there was a batch within the delivery that have had drive read issues. Often we have found that if you had a troublesome drive and took the player back that the replacement player may also have been from the same batch (we have noticed that when this has happened that the serial numbers were very close together which seems to support this) often the easiest way around this was to then arrange a player from a nearby store so that there is more chance that it was from a different batch. It looks that way anyway as most of the repeat problems that have been suffered are from a reasonably small section of stores. The factory has also mentioned that subsequent deliveries will have some hardware upgrades which also offered improved playback (they haven't said what exactly they have changed) that could also relate to these ones that have had read errors. I'll know for sure once I get one from the next shipment.
