xboxs version..? + modchip info..?

I am buying an xbox off ebay, how can they check what version it is (eg. 1.0, 1.2 etc..)

Also, has anyone heard of the XALX2+ MODCHIP made by 'Blade Electronics'

Coz im wondering wether i should get one or not, its just that there so expencive...

They cost more than any other chip but they come with a warrenty...
