For some odd reason, people get can get a bit strange when it comes to conversations about this console Vs that console, or this console Vs a PC.
Some people have also mentioned their concerns about threads in this section turning into a debate about this.

Well, here's a thread for everyone to debate this stuff, instead of doing it other threads that originally started about something else.

No going off topic and don't turn discussions into insults and fighting.

Well i was gonna say this in orkos thread but think it is more relevant here.
Someone said that gamecube is a more sociable machine because 7 people he knows owns them.Well i think that comment belongs next to the salami section in the deli.
Heres a couple of pluses for me for xbox which i own.

• X box can have a huge hard drive installed so games can be loaded directly on the harddrive instead of having load times.Also preserving your games discs from getting scratched from the constant putting in and taking out (specially if you have children).
  Speaking from experience my games to tend to get pretty well hammered compared to most of my dvds that dont have a mark
• Haveing this harddrive with all these games on it makes it very sociable especially at parties where i dont have to take my games because they are already on the machine.
• Four controllers can be installed into one machine
• I didnt have to buy a memory card
• Can play games on a 61 inch screen instead of a 17 inch monitor
• very portable compared to the pc
• dosnt tie up my computer if someone else wants to use it for study/internet or emailing
  

Personally im not gonna say the xbox is better,Just why i prefer it.

I'll put the benefits I have found for the PS2.

* All of my mates that have consoles have the PS2, except one so it is the social machine for myself.

* The range of titles. There is alot of crap but there is some great stuff too.

* Proven track record in the previous console war. This was a big influence as I felt burnt by having an N64 with too many kiddie titles in comparison.

* Final Fantasy X, Grand Theft Auto 3 choice titles. Fair enough xbox also has choice in Halo, and GC in Resident Evil and Mario Party

* A comfortable well known controller.

* It does have weaknesses too such as no hard drive, but a memory card is only $70 and holds a lot of data. If you take your data to a friends place you would need one of these anyway if your system had a hard drive, unless you took your system.

* Many say it does not look as good as the new consoles in terms of graphics. Well to be fair the system came out a long time before these consoles and for a long time they had superior titles because Microsoft did not exist in the market and the N64 was not as graphically good. (which it shouldn't be - cos if it was than the PS2 really would have been a failure). Many will argue the DC looked better or the same. I cannot judge having only played a DC in EB, but the converted titles like Crazy Taxi look awesome.

There is my Playstation 2 plug. We will all have different views, and I am sure we could all writes fors and againsts for all systems.

I'm happy to make the comparisons, personally I have found the GC to be a wonderful unit. Here's my prefrence: 1. ARCADE MACHINE, 2. GAMECUBE, 3. SNES, 4. PC, 5. N64. Not that I own all of these machines... however that's my order of preference, which only includes one of each "catagory" in other words I haven't listed multipul 16 bit systems or 128 bit systems.

• GameCube has industry-leading faster loading times that would not be at all significantly improved by the use of a had drive. The fact you can copy games onto the x-box HD encourages and enables piracy.
• Switching games dosen't bother me.
• Four (better) controllers can be plugged into GC.
• Memory cards for GC are cheap (especially third party ones), they are A LOT cheaper then buying a new hard drive (and lets face it even if you didn't put in that new big one eventually your HD will have a head crash and you'll have to replace it).
• I can play games on a Monitor, TV Screen or Projection units.
• GC is smaller and can easily be placed on coffee tables.
• GC games and accessories are cheaper then PS2 and XBOX.
• GC comes in diffrent colours to suit one's taste.

Another good thing of the PS2 is the backward capability. Whilst I only have a handful of the PS1 titles left (the Final Fantasys) it is good not to have to drag out the old grey box.

And apparently it slightly improves the textures and load times by using the PS2 for PS1 titles. Wouldn't have a clue if that is true though as I haven't tested it.

Only problem with a C64 is when it died. Most of the fans became Amiga Fan Boys... Man those guys were annoying, how their system was the best.. When you mention that it died aswell, they are so quick blaming embezzlement. etc

but back on track. C64 was a bit of fun - not that I had one , the neighbours did. Imagine putting up w/ those load times today, especially the tape deck games. I swear it could take 10 minutes to load

You can tell this forum isn't a 'real' gaming forum. If it was this thread would've gotten way out of hand a long time ago. Nope. DVD enthusiests are a civilised bunch alright. If you want to see how animals live go visit gamefaqs some day. Anyway, onto some refined, well thought out civilised console discussion..

The PS2 hardware sux ass!! Face it. I got one near launch and even back then the machine was behind the times. I think the only people raving about the PS2's capabilities were PSone owners who had kept away from the PC and Dreamcast scene. Cause if you were into either, the initial impression of the PS2's software wouldve been disappointment. This was suppose to be the DreamCast killer. The 'emotion engine' Ohh ahhh. Texture limitations and alaising were there from day one. Apparently it was because developers were only using "30% of the emotion engines power" (or some other 'statistic of hope'). "Wait till they start tapping the true power of the console !" Well I'm still waiting.

the DC did die as you know. The PS2 marketing hype probably helped. Here in Australia OziSoft was just as responsible for the demise of some fantastic albeit 'noisy' hardware. Of course man can not live by hardware alone ..and SEGA dropped the ball again and again when it came to software. What ever. SEGA as hardware has gone. Life goes on.

Now I'm not stupid enough to say PS2 is a bad console. Its not. In terms of software its fantastic. Thanks to hard working developers who know where the money is, the PS2 has some great software. I just wonder how much better it could've looked and played had SONY made a better console. I hope the PS3 nails it. I'd love the market leading console to be the best gaming platform next generation.

XBOX. Yes I'm a fan. Not an owner but a fan. Great hardware, solid support, aggressive pricing. Good on 'em. To my mind the only 'real' next gen console out there.
Had the XBOX been released beside the DreamCast, it would've truley been a DC killer. Hype not required.

GameCube. Lovely lovely little purple cheap piece of..... Yes I own one. Nintendo chose the path of hardware mediocraty and it shows. Cheaper to manufacture, the Cube would've had the edge in terms of price. Not now thanks to Microsoft's huge drop.
A $250 difference between the Cube and its competitors has been reduced to about $50-80, depending on where you shop. Comparing the Cube to the XBOX is embarrassing. It comes off better up against the PS2, but not by much (swap an alaising problem for a framerate issue ....add slightly better textures and load times).

But it all comes down to the games. How often do we hear that?!

Well I still think Microsoft is in a good position. Great hardware, solid support, Sega's love. All suggest greater success to come. The XBOX NEXT could be the console to take Sony's crown. But not in Japan. Not unless they can buy a few big Japanese developers. Still, the console that rules the USA shall rule the world. Developers know that and will follow (even in Japan).

Sony. Huge library of compromised games thanks to ass hardware. But its da' king. If PS3 is 'as good' as XBOX-Next on release then it'll be game over again imo.

Nintendo are my favourite developers. That's why I have a GameCube. If you don't love Nintendo software I can't see a reason to buy their console. Apart from say Resident Evil, everything else non Nintendo will turn up on the PS2 and XBOX, always better on the XBOX and always earlier on the PS2.

BUT. If you love delays and Nintendo games then the Cube isn't a choice. Its the only way. Zelda, Metroid.... only games I can't live without. If Nintendo's franchises ever moved to another platform I'd follow -its that simple. 3rd party Nintendo won't happen IMO. But if it did I wouldn;t worry, as long as Nintendo the software developer remained intact. Actually, going totally 3rd party for the other platforms while concentrating on Gameboy hardware could be a lucrative set up for Nintendo. SONY and Microsoft would be falling all over themselvs to secure exclusives.

Yeah I have to agree software sells the console, not the console.

Look back with the PSX and N64. I personally thought the N64 was a better machine, but in the end after 2 N64's I converted to PSX as the gaming choice was better.

I'll never part with my PS2. Still love it, and spent too many hours doing over time to get the thing.


And yes DVD people are more civilized. Also looking at some of those dedicated gaming forums, the so called moderators are worse than some of the idiots which hijack every post.

yes i prefer PC games too.... i played a ps2 for the first time over my bro's house last week and couldnt get used to the damn controller. grrrrr... gimmie keyboard and mousey any day

I'll agree with that in regards to Max Payne and other PC ported games.

I hate using a keyboard and mouse combination. I played unreal tournament like that once, but I still have enough problems using 2 analogue sticks.

Mouse is the only way for a strategy game like Star Craft or Civilization
