Basically, DVD+R's are generally more reliable for burning (newer style disc) whereas the DVD-R's are a bit less reliable for burning but supposedly compatible with a few more DVD players.

Found this on the net!
Difference between DVD-R and DVD+R DVD-R: - developed by Pioneer - linear (sequential) data format (meaning: single, continuous stream) - lacks random-access capability - lacks native defects management - relatively inexpensive DVD+R: - developed by the “DVD+RW Alliance” (Dell, HP, MCC/Verbatim, Philips, Ricoh Sony, Thomson, Yamaha) - has many characteristics of DVD-R - can be formatted as sequential data streams (video) or random-access (similar to DVD-RAM technology) - compared to DVD-R, the DVD+R incorporates a higher frequency wobble in the embedded microscopic tracking groove - "lossless linking technology" (the recorder can stop and start the writing process with extreme accuracy) - good defect management ensures data read / write accuracy |

So all in all, the DVD+R seems like the one to go for.

Except for the fact that more players seem to be compatible with -R .... all very confusing.

I'm told that +R also has the ability to be "multi-sessioned" (that is, have data written to the DVD at different times), while -R doesn't share that capability (that is, once you burn something onto it you can't add extra data in the future).
Making +R obviously a superior choice when it comes to use in data backup. |

It's all very confusing, although I have heard before that +R is a better format... |

DVD-R is an official DVD format, "+R" is not.
