Standalone DVD burner with HDD

G'day all.

Buying a new HDD-based DVD burner (tomorrow?) to replace the Pioneer
DVR-310 that has gone to mum's place for her birthday. So,
unfortunately, I'm forced to replace it, so we're after a HDD one this
time around. Ah, so sad.

Any specific recommendations? I've googled things for a few days, and
the choice seems to be down to the Toshiba RD-XS32 and the Pioneer
DVR-510.

I liked the 310, pretty much, and think its shortcomings would be sorted
by having the HDD.

But I like the writeups on the Toshiba, an very happy with my SD2500 and
love the idea of the IR blaster.

Price is similar at about $1300 for either.

I know Colin loves the Pannys :-)

The JVCs are also out there, along with the Sharps.

Comments appreciated.

Re: Standalone DVD burner with HDD

I am happy with my Pioneer 510 with 80Gb Hard drive.
These should be had for a GREAT price at the moment as the 520 is nearly
here and also a 160Gb hard drive model. (maybe called the 720)
That is the only thing I miss on my 510, a bigger hard drive 80Gb isn't big
enough for me.

Cool. I liked the usability of the 310.

About $1300, maybe a bit less, here in Perth.

Can't ever have enough HDD space, that's for sure. Not in anything.

How many hours of recordings can you get on the 80gig?

Re: Standalone DVD burner with HDD

I mainly record off a Standard Definition Set Top Box so I record at the
highest quality. So about 20+ hours at that setting. If you want to record
at lower quality up to 40+ hrs
I only get to watch TV twice a week so I have quite a bit on the HDD at any
given time.
80Gb would be enough if you watch TV every night.

Can you trim back recorded stuff if you end up with too much before or too
much after ie. you get the ads before the progggie and the stuff afterwards
because you set sufficient end time just in case it ran over?

Re: Standalone DVD burner with HDD

Yep its VERY easy to edit. I trim the ads out (in between) and the before
and after.
Its probably the easiest of any DVD recorder for on machine editing.

Yes sure do.

The Panasonic DMR-E85 with a 80Gb hard drive last month was $1160 Inc
GST here in Perth WA. They maybe cheaper now so check out the prices.

Some stores still have them at the retail price of $1599 Inc GST but
as most sell below retail you should be able to pick these up a lot
cheaper.

I just feel the play back quality is brilliant on the Panasonics.
Also have many customers with various recorders and some have a
Pioneer and Panasonic and prefer the Panasonic.

If in doubt best to go and see a few in action.

BTW I am looking at getting in Orion DVD-RW 4X media soon for those
who have Pioneer recorders and require a 4X re write disc. These new
media have a gloss white inkjet printable to the centre of the disc.

Re: Standalone DVD burner with HDD

Hey Man, (?)

I find your input informative and useful but this time I need more details.

You say some of your customers have a Pioneer and a Panasonic DVD Recorder
and that they prefer the Panasonic. Why?

I like Panasonic as a brand, but had my head set on buying a Pioneer DVD
Recorder (520H) because of the DV IN/OUT feature. Panasonics only have DV
IN.

What are the features (or is it picture quality or something else) that
people find better in the Panasonic. I've tried to compare both products to
death and to me it seemed that only difference was the DV thing I mentioned
and the brand name.

Your feedback greatly appreciated.

Apart from the obvious choice of Pioneer and Panasonic has anyone here with
any experience
with JVC dvd recorders, they have one that has 160GB and does both -R/+R and
Ram.

I'd go with the Toshiba, I've got one myself and the inputs and outputs are
very flexible and it's got great PQ in DVD mode. It also upsamples every
input to the Component output which is a great feature if you have a PJ or
running out of inputs to your TV etc...

Well, I bought the Toshiba, and I'm generally very happy with it.

Some areas to note, however.

As noted in many places, the manual is appalling. Doesn't even have an
index. You can work through it, but you shouldn't have to.

The 'Commercial Skip" function on it isn't nearly as good as the Pioneer
DVR-310's was.

Quick recording was easier to setup on the Pioneer.

I'm not a fan of SCART connectors.

It's got a DVR/TV button, and for some bizarre reason, this seems to
operate of its own accord, which mucks up the signal going to other
inputs on the (vision-switching) amp. (The SCARTS are in/out, which I
think is part of the problem.) I'm going to have to contact them about
this as its pretty annoying.

Overall, though, I'm very happy with it.
