I recommend the Pioneer 108 Dual Layer.

It should come with Nero, if not you can PM me regarding software for what you need

It's pretty easy

1. Pioneer (like headrippa said)
2. Comes with Nero or Ulead (both fine for burning stuff)
3. So easy you'll wonder what all the fuss was about

Enjoy

If your home movies are like mine, all you need is dvdshrink (free download) as well as Nero which usually comes with a Pioneer burner.

Then, like redbears said, it is ridiculously easy.

I have compressed some movies which were quite large files (not necessarily long movies) down to 60-70% and they still come out fine. Other things can be put on a second disk and retain their funtionality by just selecting still pictures for the main movie.

I also run dvd regionfree (which is not free ), but I figured it was worth it to eliminate any potential problems with region coding.
Of course this is extremely rare on home movies.

That one is here or here.
I have an older model of the cheaper OEM version and I've never heard of any problems with them.

Have fun.

single layer media is down under $1 a disc, but dual layer is still around $10, and that's if you can find anywhere that have any stock.

Thanks Pete! Are they easy to install in your comp? And do I have room? As I already have two drives normal and and dvdplayer/cd burner there is a gap inbetween these two with a plastic covering I assume it would go there? Sorry Im hopeless at this tech stuff.

I've just downloaded dvdshrink ha ha don't even have a burner yet. But how do you first transfer your dvd onto the comp do you use the burner to do that or do you have to use your dvd rom drive, as mine is stuck on region 2 and I've tried everything like dvdgenie to be able to change it with no avail.

DVD Genie only handles the software side of things, you still need the drive to be region free, some DVD drives are very easy to make region free, others you need to update the firmware to do it. You can check out www.rpc1.org for details of what is available for your particular drive.

I'm no tech wizard either.
I just took out my cd drive and connected the new drive in its place and the computer seemed to know what it it was doing from there on.

Not so sure about software, I had Nero installed first then installed dvdshrink and from memory it either recognised Nero as the burning program or it asked you at some point in the installation.
Once it's setup you don't even need to open Nero to burn a disc, just run dvdshrink, open the disc, set a few preferences and away it goes, prompts you for the blank disc when it's ready.

Don't know about recovering from being region locked, sorry.

I would have given the exact link but you didn't actually mention which drive you had, still there is a greater sense of satisfaction when you work these things out yourself.
