You really need a separate amp/receiver and decent speakers. Satellite speakers are too limiting: their mid-range usually sucks. That is, they are "tinny". Better than stereo, but not by much IMHO. You could get an adequate setup for around $2,500.00, whereas spending closer to $4,000 would get you a pretty decent system that neatly balances performance and the budget. The old adage, "you get what you pay for" applies here! $199.00 system will be pure cr@p!

If you want "good" you ahve to be prepared to pay more. Indeed I suspect if you want "adequate" you will need to pay more. My first surround system was of similar ilk although I suspect of better quality than those you have mentioned. I was impressed for a short while, but that was simply because I had moved from watching Videos in Stereo to watching dvds in 5.1. It was not long before I started to ntoice the shortcomings of the sound. It got to the point where it became quite irritating. I suppose one benefit of buying one of these systems is that you are not wasting very much money, but wasting it you are. IMHO that is.

Not to be too blunt about it, but for that sort of money you are only going to get a cr@p system, so you may as well get the cheapest cr@p you can.

marZey, he does have a valid point and he did give the blunt warning.
At the end of the day, unless someone has one of these basic systems to recommend, we probably can't tell you which is the best. I will say that it is better to buy from a store rather than online, as these items are expensive to ship and if anything goes wrong expensive to send back (if there is no service centre in your state). Also, Big Guns is being very realistic about the performance of your intended purchase. That said however you may not be as critical at this stage, so I would buy something in your price bracket that fits your needs, but don't expect too much from it. Don't get too emotional about other people's replies, it isn't worth getting hot and bothered about it. Good luck. |

You asked for an opinion. You got it. Anything you buy at that price will be cr@p. That is a fact. But what do I care? It is your money to waste. Don't get all uppity when someone who actually knows a little about home theatre systems offers you an opinion that does not suit you. That is all from me. You just cannot help some people...

yeh sorry mate, just gets confusing trying to choose wats good and stuff, and when ur saying that its all crap kinda hard to choose at all, but of course im not looking at the best home theater system ever made, im just looking for a good set for the price i have, sure it may be crap to you, but put urself in my shoes and then choose from wat i only have.
i like the telefunken one, but as redbears have said, it can be a pain with the delievery (sp?) costs and such, so may have to go around some electronic shops and look around there |

http://www.strathfield.com/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=1095 It says it does Dolby digital and Pro Logic decoding, but what actual connections does it have. I must confess that I'm not what you would call an audio buff, and am generally reasonably happy with what comes out of the TV speakers (told you I wasn't much of an audio buff ) -but would prefer surround sound.I presume these would have at least as good sound as a standard stereo TV (Singer 66cm ws). If marZey is like me in that regard, he might be happy with just 'reasonable' sound, so those might be fine. I wouldn't mind having a look at a set myself in that price range if it's got a couple of digital inputs (optical & coax?). edit: p.s. what is the USB connection for? I would have to double check the options available but remember when I tested this unit that it was pretty good value, has optical and coaxial inputs, video switching, the USB input is for PC use and is recognised as Burr Brown (makers of high quality D/A converters), this site is in Korean but you will get the idea http://www.msnmall.co.kr/tech/ssonet_5_1/ssonet02.asp If you are interested let me know off list. |
