Re: Confused as to what to do with a broken down Daewoo Celio

Thanks everyone for your responses.

To answer the question about the motor. About a year ago it would stop
when the temperature exceeded 30c. After it cooled down it would go
ok. Then noticing on start up thata bit of blue smoke would be seen.
then before it completly gave it, it would run rough and jerk all over
the place. I suspected it was a head gasket. Took it to two places. I
told them what I thought and on inspection they said it was more
"terminal" and they would replace the gasket but were not certain it
would be fixed and that a new engine would be in order. So that's when
I started getting quotes for engines etc.

I think there is only 160,000 on the clock. It is in perfect condition
apart from the engine and the aircon to be regassed. Oh and now a new
battery as it has been laying dorment for months.

Thanks again for your help and if the information above can prompt you
guys to a final solution!

Cheers

"Only" a couple of head gaskets in 300,000km?

Now we get to the nitty gritty. Sound advice, find out what's really
wrong first or sell it to someone who can assess it more accurately than
you and KNOWS he can make money out of it...

It's a 4 cylinder cheap poobox, so yeah 2 head gaskets is insignificant
particularly since they are so easy to do on the family II Holden engines.
Most 4 pots wouldn't even last anywhere near that long.

Yep, that would be best. A Daewoo Cielo has zero resale value anyway so I
would just flog it off to someone prepared to spend the dollars on it to get
it going.

What is actually wrong with the engine, "died" doesn't tell us much?
How many klms has the car done?

Now is

$800.00 seems very cheap for a recoed engine, for that price it sounds
like you would be buying a s/h engine.

As said before, why not find out exactly what is wrong with it ?
Then ya can make decisions about it.

You could always put it up for tender!

Not that I've got a clue how you'd go about it, but I never cease to
be amazed at how much people pay for busted government gear (both
tender and auction). Of course you can't rely on it but, like the
govt, you probably don't have to accept the highest tender. ;-)

Confused as to what to do with a broken down Daewoo Celio

Hi Guys and Gals,

I have a 96 Daewoo Celio which has died on it's butt and not sure what
to do and I would like to sell it.

The motor has died and of course it will need to be replaced. Now is
it worth geting a new motor and then selling it or is it possible to
sell it as is at a lower price? Would someone buy it knowing it needs
approx $1000 plus of work done to it to make it road worthy? Been
quoted $800 for a recon engine. No idea how much labour would cost to
replace it.

Apart from burning it (the ilegal option!) i wouldn't know what to do.
Do I spend the extra funds to say sell it at $3000 or as is for about
$1000? (Approx prices. no idea what it is worth.).

I'd appreciate any help you guys can give.

Thanks

Sell as is - otherwise you are throwing good money after bad.
Burning it is NOT recomended - but the only way you'd get more than a coupla
hundred as is I'd think.

Good Luck

Re: Confused as to what to do with a broken down Daewoo Celio

Get a firm quote for the new engine and advertise it with two prices; as-is
or new-donk.
Then you've got both bases covered and it hasn't cost you anything....

I'd dump arrange for a friend to take it away and dump it in the sea then
ring up the insurance company.

Are you sure the motor cannot be salvaged? Not just something semi-major
that could be patched up?

Re: Confused as to what to do with a broken down Daewoo Celio

I couldn't see much market for a 96 daewoo with a stuffed engine... is
the car in alright conditions / k's otherwise, or not really? If it's
alright otherwise my guess is fixing it would be the most 'profitable'
option...
