Bet you wish you still had it, as they're *exceptionally* rare. So rare, in
fact, that almost fuck none of them were ever built due to the war
production :)

1946 was the first full year for civilian US models once production
facilities got back to normal.

Because:

A) It belonged to Ford. It's there problem to fix it and transport it home.
B) The whole purpose of driving ti was to review it. There's not much
point reviewing a car with faulty power steering.
C) Engine bay covered in power steering fluid. Fire hazard....
D) Unroadworthy, no insurance cover.

What would be the point?

The journos aren't about to keep driving it after a fault like that.
For isn't about to bother to transport it to a different bit of the Ford
empire when they've got the car in a dealer's workshop already.

Without oil, it would screw the pump.

Why Ford cannot win Bathurst....

"Imagine our disappointment, then, when we discovered that we couldn't take
the XR8 back to Sydney with us. After a day of easy, open road driving and a
handful of U-turns for photography, the power steering became heavy,
developed a whining noise and there was fluid all over the engine bay. As a
precaution, we took the XR8 to the Ford dealer at Bathurst before heading
home.

Closer inspection revealed that the power steering pump had burst a seal.
There were no spare pumps in stock (Ford says we should regard this as a
sign that it is not a common failure) and so we left the XR8 in Bathurst.
Game over."

Big deal!

I lost power steering in my VP Calais between corners on the Old Pacific
highway, and it wasn't a gradual thing either. Caught me by surprise when I
tried to turn into the next corner!

I drove it around like that for a couple of weeks until it was repaired with
no problems. It was during this time that I first drove the gf's Valiant, I
didn't even notice its lack of power steering :)

So in short, I see no reason why it couldn't be driven back from Bathurst!

I lost power steering in my Jag and it was a tow truck job. The wheel would
not turn. Must of between because of the heavy v12 between the suspension
towers. With the power steering ok you could drive it with your pinky.

I know a bloke who lost PS in a Fairlane on a gravel road corner at a most
interesting speed.
Big prang resulted.
Since then he's removed the power steering from each of his vehicles, and
is in real trouble with mix'n'match because there's no option to do that on
most current stuff.

And this has what in relation to a V* Ford Supercar?

On another note, hadn't MOTOR mag been HSV bashing for about 4 years that
everytime they took a HSV for a hard fang they kept popping power steering
pumps and they aventually admitted the problem and fixed it during the VY
series?

Danny.

Re: Why Ford cannot win Bathurst....

My VN commodore got a new PS pump every month. Turned out that the PS pump
didn't like spinning at 5000 RPM and would blow a seal.

I have always regarded PS Pumps to hate any kind of stress you put on them.
Just talking about this and I can smell PS fluid!
