Sure, but you have to question the wisdom of putting up a sign saying "obey the other sign", eh? I mean, if they don't obey the first sign, why on earth would anyone think another sign would help??? Try this then: First sign say "60", next sign says "No, really. 60" Or perhaps "keep left" and "You should be here<-" ;-))) > >> >> Next they will need signs to tell us to read the signs. > >You usually complain about any speed camera you happen to notice yet when >there is an effort by the authorities to target the cause of one third of >the fatalities in this country you still want to complain? You are very hard >to please. Ah, now it becomes clear. If we use the RTA figures, we can see that 43% of crashes involve "speeding", and even though the RTA itself says that only around 1 in 8 of this 43% involve exceeding the speed limit, we *must* spend money on advertising, radar & lidar and, of course, speed cameras. Yet when pedestrians account for 33% of road fatals, and something around 80% of these are the fault of the pedestrian, do we have an advertising campaign? No. Do we have "police targetting pedestrians crossing against the Don't Walk sign"? No. Gee, I can't think why anyone would be cynical about the whole road safety industry. If they've identified those (very few) specific locations as problem areas, then it's probably best to just put up a few signs. Personally I think we need a broader campaign to better educate people about how to cross the road safely. There is a very obvious lack of courtesy, consideration and and tolerance on our roads and in public in general. I think there is serious problem in our society and the government needs to completely rethink the education system. Focusing on penalties is not working unless things have changed in the last 6 to 12 months. Last I heard, then number of dollars the government is collecting from fines is increasing, and they are getting more and more agressive with their enforcemnt, yet the number of accidents and fatalaties is not dropping. -- Ben Thomas Opinions, conclusions, and other information in this message that do not relate to the official business of my firm shall be understood as neither given nor endorsed by it. |

More proof of dumbing down
They are installing signs at the traffic light and pedestrian light controlled
intersections near where I work on St. Kilda Rd in Melbourne. The signs say "Motorists Beware Pedestrians" and "Pedestrians Obey Signals". Since when was it possible to get your license without showing that you knew how to beware pedestrians at intersections? This is mainly an office area, so it's mostly adults that will be using the pedestrian crossings. Why do they need a sign to tell them to obey the little red or green man? Next they will need signs to tell us to read the signs. -- Ben Thomas Opinions, conclusions, and other information in this message that do not relate to the official business of my firm shall be understood as neither given nor endorsed by it. |

Re: More proof of dumbing down
It's probably just another one of the ways for the authorities to try to
protect us from ourselves. Or to cover themselves when some dumbarse gets run over while crossing against the wishes of the little red man. Where's Ponsenby when you need him? Damm right. It's the Insurance Shysters hard at work,. Evidently, they've made it conditional that extra signs are placed. But I wonder. Are they really aimed at the tram drivers? Trams make far bigger messes of people than cars, and their brakes used to be complete shite. Not sure about the current models though, which appear to have a ripper mag-friction brake system. (never seen it used - it'd be a real laugh in a crowded tram, though. Are they still running those bloody dangerous W class devices in St Kilda Road? -- Toby quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur |
