China road toll

Its mainly due to these guys that crude is US$55 [Hey its ok, they just want
wheels too]

China's road toll soars

More than 600 people are killed and more than 45,000 injured on China's
roads every day, according to estimates from the World Health Organisation.
With the car market in China booming and so many new and inexperienced
drivers taking to the roads, traffic fatalities there are forecast to
increase to almost 500,000 deaths each year by 2020 unless urgent action is
taken. Injuries from road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for
people aged 15-45 in China.

600 PER DAY ! Back to bikes for you guys.....

Not far from the top here either -- and the Chinese probably have a
much lower suicide rate!

Could we have that as pro rata please?... Means SFA otherwise.

China has a population of approx 1.3 billion. 600 /day = 219,000 per annum
or 1 death per 5,900 of population.
Australia has a population of approx 20 million. 2003 had 1634 fatalities or
1 death per 12,200 of population.
So china is about twice as bad as australia. HOWEVER - I suspect that China
has far fewer vehicles per head of population on the road, so when the
fatalities are spread amongst road users China is even worse.
In 1989 however australia's population was approx 17 million and had 2801
fatalities, or 1 fatality per 6000 of population, which means in 1989 we
were pretty close to where china is now.

Let's see, 600 x 365 / 1.2G compared with 1700 / 19M. Roughly twice
Australia's toll.

Just what I was thinking.

China has a population of roughly 1.2 billion, so thats 600/1.2B per day
or 365 x 600 / 1200 = 182 deaths per million people per year.

Victoria has a road toll of roughly 400 per year for roughly 5 million
people? Thats about 80 deaths per million people per year.

China: 182
Victoria: 80

YIKES!
And most of them are still on bicycles and buses!

How many drivers do you think there are in China ?

I"d say 100 million would be optimistic.

So multiply your figures by at least 10, maybe 13.

That's a lot of dead people/capita

Actually, overall Australia has a worse driving record than China
according to the TAC
http://www.tacsafety.com.au/jsp/cont...null&pageID=83
or
http://tinyurl.com/4syw9

Australia 8 deaths per 100000 population
China 5 deaths per 100000 population

We probably have a much higher ratio of cars to people though so thats
not quite accurate either.
Come on, someone whos bored somewhere can tally the figures for the
major centres around the world and post them. :)
