Satellite TV providers fight pirates
<SNIP> ....Foxtel spokesman Mark Furness said the new smartcards were "pirate-proof technology" and would quickly render all imitations useless. "This technology has not been cracked by pirates in three years of use in other markets around the world," he said. "What we want to do is encourage people who have pirate services to contact us and legitimise their services." The anti-piracy technology is the first phase in Foxtel's estimated $550 million roll-out of digital television services, due for completion in the first half of next year. All subscribers will eventually get a new digital set-top box allowing them to view more than 100 digital channels. Foxtel - jointly owned by Telstra, News Corp, and Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd - will also enable viewers to interact with the television station via their telephone line. The digital roll-out faces a major hurdle in winning approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on third party-access issues. -- Details: http://www.theage.com.au/articles/20...351579804.html More news: http://www.auspaytv.com.au/forums/ipdl.php *** On cable TV they have a weather channel - 24 hours of weather. We had something like that where I grew up. We called it a window. -- Dan Spencer |

Good! About time too.
But let us hope, too, that this crackdown corresponds a more value for money service for legitimate cable/satellite TV users. Otherwise the millions of dollars they say they lose to piracy won't be recouped. People will just stop subscribing. |

And the Lord did grin, and people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths,
and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and "NewsMan" <cocopops@nospam.hotpop.com> spake, saying > "What we want to do is encourage people who have pirate services to > contact us and legitimise their services." Bullshit, If that was the case they would not force users to use the Foxtel box and pay an installation fee for something they already own. If they were serious about this they would just be charging the postage cost of sending out a legit smartcard, then your normal subs fee less a discount for not renting a Foxtel STB from that point on. -- Kwyj. |

Since when has reduced effort for business led to higher quality product?

Re: Satellite TV providers fight pirates
The encryption is damn good that paying customers can't receive content with
the new whizbang cards. Got mine in the mail today telling me to switch cards within the next 7 days to maintain service. Can't get jack with the new card! Of course ringing FoxTel gets you a recording saying they can't take your call due to unusually high call volumes. What a joke! Re: Satellite TV providers fight pirates
I disagree. I think it should just be the works for $30 - $40 per month.
Anything over $40 and I say lets go see the pirate! :) "Weststate A/V Systems" <WAVS@nospam.com> wrote in message news:3fcfe875$0$1728$5a62ac22@freenews.iinet.net.a u... > Its called milking the cow, and Foxtel have always done that to its max > advantage. I do know that people are certainly not going to take on a big monthly repayment just to watch what Foxtel offers. Colin http://members.iinet.net.au/~colinf/product.htm |
